KITCHEN HUT

The Kitchen Hut is the large oval hut immediately behind the Leader Hut, in the middle of the first circle of Residence Huts.  It is roughly divided in half by a long serving counter.  Three different size knives, with dull points, are kept in plain view on the counter, for slaves to use in the preparation of food.  Fresh picked fruits and vegetable are usually stored on this counter in bowls and pails.

When you enter the door from the south, the serving counter is to the right.  Past that, set against the east wall is a large stone cooking fireplace, big enough to roast a whole tarsk on a spit, which can be turned by a wind up mechanical motor.  The top lintel surface is steel, which gets hot enough to use as a stove, and iron boxes, set in cavities in the in the brickwork of the side walls, can be used as ovens.  On either side of the fireplace are shelves for dry goods, such as warm kalana/paga, beans/lentils, sugar, flour, canned/jarred goods, and other non perishables such as jerked meat and pemmican.

To the left is the washbasin and drying racks.  Short chains attached to the steel supports of the basin allow slaves to chained to it, but not to reach any food.  This can be used to persuade slaves to wash dishes, if they are not so inclined.  The washbasin drains into a pipe that dumps in the stream, downstream of the Lair, but there is no water running in.  Hot wash water must still be heated in pots over a fire - and rinse water must also be carried into the hut.  Past the wash basin are drying racks, and then storage shelves for dishes, cups, bowls, tableware, etc.

The slaves who wash, dry and put away dishes always check for imperfections and chips as they work, so only a brief visual check for imperfections, during a serve, is necessary.  There are no separate slave plates or cups either, and anything with chips is thrown away.  There is a garbage can in the kitchen, which is emptied into a larger one near the gate.  Most of the trash is periodically buried far outside the Lair by guards, although some is composted to fertilize the gardens..

Directly across from the door, on the south wall is a large horizontal ice chest, which is cooled by blocks of ice cut from Hrimgar glacier.  The lid of the cooler lifts from hinges and can be laid against the wall.  Paga, kalana and juice bottles are kept chilled in the cooler - as well as cheeses, butter, roaast tarsk pieces and leftover cooked foods.
