(The Bing Cherry color looks more like rootbeer to me !) Russ finally found the problem to his barely-noticeable spongy brake pedal. He pulled apart the rear caliper and found that a piston had a minute crack in the face. Upon examination of another piston, he found yet another hole ! It appears that there is a flaw in the bar stock used to machine these pistons, causing a very very tiny hole to develop. After pressing in new pistons he bled the system, then went to work on a old U-Joint.
Left, Tony Harvey had rebuilt the left rear axel at the last tech session, so here he is buried in the repair of the right rear axel.

When Terry changed the fluid in his ZF, a bolt head fell out ! He stuck his finger in and felt around to find another bolt head. Both of these ring gear bolt heads were ROUND ! Meaning they had been spinning freely inside the case for a LONG time. Further inspection reveal ALL 10 BOLTS had broken, and the heads had been polished and rounded. How long ? Who knows. But at least one caught the attention of the gear, and was flung into or almost thru the case, cracking it. It could have been much worse, a totally trashed ZF, thus the smile on Terrys face.

Several carburetor rebuilds were accomplished, while other cars lined up for the hoist to receive some A/C work, and Roger was busy cutting and welding much of the morning.

Although the intended focus of this event was on A/C systems, with all the swinging going on, it could have been called Hammer Day. As one commented, way too much hammer was needed today. And sadly so. After finishing his brake caliper rebuild, Russ, and a couple of others, including Curt Hall installed new u-joints. By the end of the day, there was a pile of red (from rust) needle bearings.

The blue-handle pliers are just holding the vise from turning, while the hammer punches thru the old U-Joint. Above, the old joint apart, and right the new joint, the owner displays the new snap-rings versus the old style retaining clips.
