PCNC's Winter Tech Event
The weather was clear for the Winter Tech Session, in Fremont California.   The lead task for the day was to replace a leaky front seal on Greg Jacobs ZF.
Gregs friend, Victor Zeve, our host for the day, was just getting into position to begin pulling the ZF, when I arrived.  Initially, it was expected to be the 4 or 5 of us, but as word got out, interest in the event grew, in the end there were 12 Panteras and 31 people !
Victor describes his property as 2,000 square foot garage with detached house, and rightly so.
At the end of an ample driveway, towards the back, is the garage.  Built by the previous owner, it is divided into two sides, the left was built to house a large motor home and woodshop.  The right now holds 2 beautiful cars, an early 70s Camero, and the modern convertible 6-speed version.
Greg had a front seal ZF leak.  Completing this job is a story unto itself, as Murphy was present even before Mike Drew arrived.  Several little issues made slow going. The stock-sized starter was attached with nyloc nuts, which were just tall enough to  be too close to the starter to fit a wrench or socket.  The solution was to grind down my socket to thin wall specifications.  Next the speedo cable just didnt want to pull out. And so it went.  We also had to bend the ears back, where the side mounts are shimmed into the side brackets.  (See the image of the empty bay.) Otherwise the ZF could not come back far enough to disengage the spline from the block.
With the ZF finally out, the 3 hexhead (5mm) bolts holding the sleeve in place refused to come loose.  2 had to be drilled out.  The seal was replaced, going back together much faster than it came apart.
While the game of ZF tug-of-war was going on, Mark McWhinney was changing to Bosch window switches, and troubleshooting other electrical issues on his newly acquired 71 (#1512), with the help of Bob Benson.  If we had the right spring perch wrench, we would also have adjusted his ride height.
