Tech Event: Electrical Gremlins II !
Although the weather report contained possible showers, it turned out to be a good day to wrench. Greg arrived, and we sorted out my garage to make space to pull his ZF, again. Yes again. Just a few weeks ago, we pulled this ZF, and replaced the front seal. The leak persisted, a new source this time, the back side of the collar, something I didnt think to check.
Anyway, the title of this story is Electrical Gremlins, but the car in most need was Marks, and he could not make it after all. I did make my headlight motor functional, so I guess that counts.
Ill let Larry Finch fill in some details Chuck, Tom Padula, Curt Hall and Greg Jacobs had begun the transaxle R&R from Greg's car when I arrived about 10:30, then Bill Santos arrived, and by lunchtime we had the tranny sitting on the floor. No blood spilled. No fingers squished. No foul language required. The leak was confirmed to be at the tranny as Greg expected, and thankfully not the rear main.
(We used the yellow strap to support the ZF on the way up and out, to take it easy on our old backs. Ed.)
Something I am not happy with is bending the tab back to allow the ZF to move rearward, but studs attach the ZF side mounting ears (later mount style) leaving no choice. I suggest replacing these studs for bolts. Chuck
Larry continues, "Chuck and Suzie provided a fine afternoon lunch, consisting of his famous (Santa Maria-style) Tri-Tip, and another version of his award winning chili (Chicken, this time). The tangy taste from my gear-oil coated fingers mingling well with the tri-tip sandwiches. A little parts degreasing, cleaning of the mating surfaces, some sealer and three bolts later had what the manual calls the 'guiding tube' reinstalled and the tranny was ready to slide back in, and it proceeded to do just that. No blood spilled. No squished fingers. No foul language required.
Left, Bill Santos describes to Curt Hall how he wedged in two Flex-a-lite sucker fans on a shroud behind his stock radiator, WITHOUT laying forward the radiator. Right, Bill swings the mighty mallot ?!?!?
Better late than never, Guy Dellavecchia pulled in, soon followed by Steve Liebenow, and another wave of attendees stopped by to help put the ZF back, but were too late, as it was done, and time to take a test run around the block.
Detomasos present for the day included Bill's orange L, Tom's white Euro GTS, the famous blue Goose of Steve's and of course, the Melton metal mobile.
