Service

“To be of real service to others, stop seeing people how you want them to be and see them as they are.”

Once we have been awakened from the illusion of an ego-centric world, it becomes clear that the reason we are here is to be of service to the universe. As we begin to look at our lives with open eyes, we see a myriad of opportunities for service. In many cases the larger consciousness will waste no time in offering you “assignments”. Some will be small; a smile, a kind word, some minor assistance. Others will be more long-term and require a deeper commitment. If you can, consider donating blood, becoming an organ donor or volunteering for charity work in any field of service that you have a heart for.

In all of these keep your perspective and balance your service with a keen insight into the reality of the situation. The ultimate goal of our being here is to awaken others so they also may be of service. There are times to give assistance and times to teach others to help themselves. You will not always be available for that person, so train them for the time when you are absent. This may involve helping them reason through a problem or situation instead of just doing it for them. Once they can understand how to discover the solution on their own, they will be one step closer to their own awakening.

The programming of our old nature is to go to extremes, so avoid rushing from self-sacrifice to self-centeredness. The ego will ask, “What’s in it for me?” Our new nature knows that this is due to the fact that the ego is afraid of extinction and resents being put second to anything or anyone. Still, consideration should be given to maintaining our mental and physical health and avoiding “service burn-out”. Proper rest, appropriate periods of solitude and exercise are essential in recharging our energy levels.

Remember also as you move through life that you will be serving many other human beings who are still in various stages of “sleepwalking”. They may be unaware of or misinterpret your assistance. They are seeing you through the restless dreams that the ego-driven mind can create in us all. Some may look at you and see a friend and others see an enemy. By and large people will try not to see you at all, and it matters little whether or not they do. Those who do not notice you are still helped, and those who do will gain a valuable lesson by observing your behavior and demeanor. What they do with that lesson is up to them and entirely out of your hands, as it should be. You are there to pass along a gift, the exchange point in a transfer of universal life energy. If you expect more than that, such as fame, fortune or even recognition, you are tempting the ego to enter the transaction. Proper service is free of such contamination.
