| Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated was founded on January 9, 1914 on the campus of Howard Universiy by three young African-American male students. The founders, Honorable A. Langston Taylor, Honorable Leonard F. Morse, and Honorable Charles I. Brown, wanted to organize a Greek-letter fraternity that would truly exemplify the ideals of brotherhood and scholarship. The founders desired an organization that would be "a part of" the general community rather than "apart from" the general community. They believed each potential member should be judged on his own merits rather than his family background or affluence, without regard to race, nationality, skin tone or texture of hair. Since the fraternity's inception, the founders concieved Phi Beta Sigma as a mechanism to deliver services to the community. Rather than acquiring skills to be used exclusively for themselves and their immediate families, they would return their acquired skills to the community from which they had come. This conviction is mirrored in the fraternity's motto, "Culture for service, and service for humanity." Today, Phi Beta Sigma has blossomed into an international organization. No longer a singly entity, the fraternity has established: -Phi Beta Sigma Educational Foundation -Phi Beta Sigma Housing Foundation -Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union -Phi Beta Sigma Charitable Outreach Foundation Other Information Official Colors: Royal Blue and Pure White Official motto: Culture for service, service for humanity Founding values: Brotherhood, scholarship, service Philanthropic cause: Hurrican Katrina Disaster Relief Aid Major events: Radical Reading and Trick or Treating, Words from the Wise, Networking Workshop Prominent members: Michael Steward, Emmett Smith, Thorris Chestnut, Jerry Rice, Blair Underwood, Stefan Charles-Pierre |
