The story of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated is to a large extent the story of African American students, whether organized or not, who attend predominantly white colleges or universities in the United States prior to WWII.

It was during this time of intense racial discriminaiton that Black students accomplishments were all the more noteworthy. They were determined to work their way through college even  in the face of seemingly insurmountable social and economic odds. To truly understand these accomplishments is to appreciate the birth of African American college fraternities on predominantly White campuses.

Black Greek-letter organizations on the campus of Indiana University may well have begun in 1903, but there were too few registrants to assure a continuing organization. In that year, a club called Alpha Kappa Nu was formed with the purpose of strengthening the voices of Black students at the university and of Black residents of Bloomington, Indiana. There is no record of any similar organization until Kappa Alpha Nu, a forerunner of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, was founded in 1911.

The ten illustrious founders gave birth to a concept, the idea that if members were to be brothers, they must be brothers on the best terms known; If they were to bind themselves together, it must be around something strong enough to hold; if they were to sing, it must be to someting with a lasting refrain; if they were to drink a toast, it must be of something beyond all things trivial or vulgar; they would exalt the theme of achievement.

Reliance was placed upon strong Christian ideals and honorable achievement in every field of human endeavor. Kappa Alpha Psi begain uniting men of culture, patriotism, and honor as brothers. Today, under the theme "Training for Leadership," Kappa Alpha Psi promotes intellectual and aesthetic evaluation for more than 100,000 members, both undergraduate and graduate, located throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Korea, and the Bahamas.
