Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded January 13, 1913 on the campus of Howard University. The twenty-two collegiate women who founded Delta Sigma Theta envisioned an organization of women who believed in serious and strong community endeavors. These students would use their collective strength to promote academic excellence and to provide assistance to persons in need.

A first prominent initiative by the founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. in March of 1913. Since that time, the organization continues to be serve the community through inspired programming.

The major programs of Delta Sigma Theta are based upon the orgranizatio's Five-Point Thrust:
-Economic development
-Educational development
-International awareness and involvement
-Physical and mental health
-Political awareness and inolvement
