Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is the oldest Greek-letter organization founded for and by African American college women. Sixteen illustrious ladies founded Alpha Kappa Alpha on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University. They were led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, who saw the sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interactions with friends and associates.

Alpha Kappa Alpha's membership is comprised of ladies of distinction and exemplary character, who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service. Today, Alpha Kappa Alpha is an international organization, with undergraduate and graduate chapters located throughout the United States, West Africa, the United Kingdom, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Korea, and Germany.

Since its founding, the efforts of Alpha Kappa Alpha women have promoted high scholarship, vocational and career guidance, health services, and the advancement of human and civil rights.
