the earth is my mother
the earth is my mother
she raised me from a seedling
(knee-high to a grasshopper)
and taught me the ways of the world

happiness can be given
by way of momma's gifts
i do not take for granted
wildflowers in my hair

sometimes my mother gives me
a beautiful shower of her finest leaves
cascading about my face
her generosity brings me to tears

when i grow anxious
mama lets me play
in a cool bath of joyous teardrops

before the day is through
mama sends me
a stern, loving sound from the trees
woodpecker sent lest i should forget
my purpose in this place

when i am lonely and frightened,
mother, ever-knowing, provides
the graceful monarch on my shoulder
to wipe away tears

- as a babe i would cry
and wail in the dark
my momma blest me with stars
naming each one for my freckles
my mother-
                 i give you my peace
