| the earth is my mother she raised me from a seedling (knee-high to a grasshopper) and taught me the ways of the world happiness can be given by way of momma's gifts i do not take for granted wildflowers in my hair sometimes my mother gives me a beautiful shower of her finest leaves cascading about my face her generosity brings me to tears when i grow anxious mama lets me play in a cool bath of joyous teardrops before the day is through mama sends me a stern, loving sound from the trees woodpecker sent lest i should forget my purpose in this place when i am lonely and frightened, mother, ever-knowing, provides the graceful monarch on my shoulder to wipe away tears - as a babe i would cry and wail in the dark my momma blest me with stars naming each one for my freckles my mother- i give you my peace |
