The Patch That Never Was 1979

Never Was Patch
Using the current patch design at the time, the name West Valley College Police was changed to just Police in big letters across the top; however, this patch was never used. The reason why it was not used is not known, but it is speculated that the "powers that be" did not like the word police in big letters. Perhaps this was due to the times because in the late 60's early 70's there were many campus riots and demonstrations throughout the state. There were those on campus who were not comfortable with police on campus. If anyone does not believe a change like this would upset people, here is a link to a news article when B.A.R.T. Police changed their patches in 2009.

At this time the department was 10 officers strong with a sergeant and chief. The California Penal Code now recognized the officers as fully sworn while on duty; however, newly hired officers were put into field training and sent to the police academy at a later time. The department also received its P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards in Training) certification that year.

Although this patch was never used, it would be the design from which the current police patch was patterned.
