I was wondering whose birthday on 27th June !
Next moment his sweet, soft, MAKHAMLI voice was vibrating the air,
touching hearts with all lovers of Gazals, his fan.
“HOSWALO KO KHABAR KYA………”
Yes it was Jagjit Singh live concert at Chowdiah Memorial Hall,
Bangalore. Time 7:20 PM, Date as I mention, 27th June. It was a
charity concert organized by Bangalore Metropolitan Round Table 44 Ladies Circle
5 (www.roundtable44.org)
in association with Sun MicroSystem and Tata Indicom.
After few audio visual clips and some marketing details from the
sponsors the show begun. “Dil Thaam ke Bethayiye……..” Jagjit Singh
introduced all his colleagues on different musical instruments. He instructed
the sound specialist to adjust the Bass, Trouble
and volume of different microphone.
Then almost three hours, he continued musical melodious Gazals one
by one……Excellent !!! Terrific!!!

“HUJUR AAP KABHI EHATARAAM KARATAA CHALO..”
A melodious Gazal from his “Journey” album.
He continues, “Yeh sher khaas taur pe biviyon ke liye hai..”
UNHE YEH JID KI MUJE DEKH KAR KISI KO NA DEKHE
MERA YE SHAUKH KI SAB SE KALAAM KARATA CHALOO”
And he presented a joke.
One husband was bored by his marriage life and wife. He brought one
dog. His wife was irritated and finally he has to rid of that dog.
He took dog with him in the car. Drop it on the way. Came back.
Surprisingly dog reached back first at his home.
After few days he again tried. This time he drove the car from
different streets, high ways, and farms for about 2-3 hours and dropped it on
the way far away. He started his returned journey. On the way he dialed his home
number from mobile and informed his wife that now, out Tomy will not come back
as I have dropped it very far unknown place. “what are u talking about? Tomy
has already arrived here at home” “Oh! Is it? Please, hand over the phone to
Tomy, as now I am lost on the way.” :))
He he he...really funny..
Then Gazal continues

A small five minutes break for ten-fifteen minutes!!!!:)
Have a break have a KitKat.
Outside instead of KitKat, Potato chips, cold drinks,
Samosa and Kachori were available. But it was too much rush.
The organizer collected everyone’s PHARAMAAISH = choice of Gazal
during interval. Once again the curtain on the stage was raised. After the break
it was real ZAMAAVAT. He started with 3 Gazals related to CHAND (moon). He had
started his concert with these same 3 Gazals at Ahmedabad. Here he presented
them immediately after the break

Then they spend their whole life in search of proper sight.!!! :)
Yes love is blind and marriage is eye opener :)

and during this one era…

He invited one poet to present some SHERs. He warned him, “only
one SHER”

He appreciated Jagjit Singh’s effort to bring all the nice Gazals
to the mass public by his sweet voice.
Jagjit ji requested him to present one more SHER.

TUM APANAA MU IDHAR KAR LO,
HAM APANAA MU UDHAR KAR LE”
It was a lucky draw for the audience. The first prize was Tata
Indicom phone. He suggested the winner to come fast to collect the prize before
the organizer changed his mind.” :) Third prize he announced from himself. It
was an invitation of that night dinner with him. Dinner and hospitability was
organized by Taj group of hotel. So many people from the audience felt jealousy
for the winner. :)
And the show resumed.
Then he started with old Hindi movie songs

“Sarakati jaaye hai rukh se nakaab aahista aahista…..”
Remember movie Sur? No, he did not sung any Gazal/song of Sur. That
movie contains JUGAL BANDI of two musical instruments. Same way TABALAA and
Violin JUGAL BANDI was started. He initially harmonized both USTAAD by, his
harmonium signals. Then he was silent looking/listening and enjoying the magic
of music.

“KAHI DOOR JAB DIN DHAL JAAYE…….”
Song from ever green movie Anand. Bird’s KALARAV was played from
the electronics synthesizer to make evening atmosphere. He instructed audience
not clap along with song, sing along with him……
And then the time was stop. All was singing with him. He became
silent or singing just to provide guidance to the flow. The audience was
singing. Violin’s sur was accompanying the songs. All old classic
songs.

Then one more Jugal Bandi started from Payal’s sound by
synthesizer and TABALAA. It was like a female dancer (like MADHUBAALAA) is
dancing with GHUNGHAROO on her legs in rhythm with TABALAA.

OR
“MOHE PANGHAT PE NANDLAL CHHED GAYO RE...”
Then some Panjabi(??) songs. Fast song.

The audience was like in the state of intoxication. All were
playing loud whistle in rhythm along with song.
Then mood change. Gazal changed. Slow one…..

Finally this concert was also over. It becomes past unforgettable
memories. At last again JugalBandi and slowly the curtain downs…..
Now something about struggle to get the tickets.
All tickets were sold out two days before. I tried my luck on the
venue of event Chowdiah Memorial Hall, before the show start. Organizer showed
their helplessness. One person was asking double price. I asked many people.
Most of them denied. No extra ticket. Rests of them were like me…..searching
for tickets. I was not alone. Few people were there with extra tickets, but
demand was more than supply. One couple was buying the tickets, but they had Rs.
25 less. So we all tried to convince the seller, to sell tickets to us. However,
that person let go Rs. 25. One couple even came from Mysore. I found during
interval that, luckily they got free pass.
