President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today cited two Filipino inventors who reaped a record of six medals at the Seoul International Fair 2002 conducted December 4 to 8, 2002 in Seoul, South Korea.
The President recognized the achievements of Dr. Virgilio Malang and
Rolando Dela Cruz, impressing that the works of the two inventors would go a
long way in promoting science technology in the country.
In simple rites at Malacanang’s Ceremonial Hall, the President also handed over
a P1-million check as cash reward to Dr. Malang and another P500, 000
for Dela Cruz.
Secretary Estrella Alabastro of the Department of Science and Technology
assisted the President in giving the cash award from the President’s Social
Fund.
Dr. Malang and Dela Cruz won in the Seoul fair, billed as an
intellectual battleground for 385 inventions by 287 inventors from 30
countries.
Dr. Malang won the gold medal for his invention Psidium Guajava
Effervescing Gynecological Insert, a silver medal for his Patient Side-Turning
Hospital Bed, and a bronze medal each for Light Refracting Earpick, External
Vaginal Cleanser and a Brooms Way of Hanging.

Bringing home any medal from the millennium games
appeared to be very difficult for the Filipino athletes but not for the
Filipino inventors who also compete internationally.
Armed with individual inventiveness and creativity, not to forget utility of their designs, the Filipino inventors garnered top positions giving the country seven medals in the recently concluded International Invention, Innovation, Industrial Design and Technology Exhibition (ITEX 2000) held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia September 27-29.
Of the 14-member Filipino delegation seven of
them brought home two gold, two silver, and three bronze medals who bested
other inventors, considered as some of the best minds, from the different parts
of the world.
Engr. Cornelio Seño and Rolando dela Cruz each got a gold medal for their inventions called “Pressure Fluid Machine” and “Topical Formulation in Removing Warts, Moles and the Like Using Cashew Nuts” respectively. The silver medal winners were Capt. Rodolfo Arambulo and Dr. Rainier Villanueva while Dr. Virgilio Malang, Rodolfo Biescas, Sr, and Gonzalo Catan settled for one bronze medal each. (see list of winners and their inventions)
Eng. Cornelio Seño, one of the two gold medalists, is an agricultural engineer by education and electromechanical engineer and inventor by experience and has already four US patents and four Philippine patents under his name. The other gold medal winner is inventor Rolando dela Cruz who spent 25 years of research for his winning herbal preparation from cashew nuts (Annacardium occidentale) now known as “Dewart” and “Demole”.
This victory is a repeat of last year’s International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva, Switzerland where seven of our inventors also brought home medals.
Participation of our inventors in international competitions has always been realized through the support of DOST. These efforts to promote Filipino inventions is in compliance with RA 7459 also known as the Inventor and Inventions Act which is implemented by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI), an agency of the DOST, that assists and supports Filipino inventors.

Review of Virgilio Malang’s book Inventions and
Innovations: A Glimpse of the Filipino Legacy
A patent rip-off. Columnist Andrew Marshall reviewed a book by Dr Virgilio Malang called Inventions and Innovations: A Glimpse of the Filipino Legacy, which outlined the Philippines history of inventors and innovations. Some of the invention made by Filipinos included: a signal light for vehicles making a turn invented by Marcelo Buncio (later used by Henry Ford on the Model T), and the Lunar Rover which was invented by Eduardo San Juan while he was working at NASA. The book also dispels the myths about the fluorescent lamp and the Armalite assault rifle being invented by Filipinos. The Filipino Inventors' Society is the oldest organisation of its kind in Asia, established in 1943. Author of the book, Dr Malang Virgilio, holds 23 patents including one for an ear probe with a luminous tip.
