1. What were the underlying causes of WWI?

The underlying causes of WWI were the growing nationalistic feelings throughout Europe and the world. It had been more than 100+ years that such an influential war had occurred and many of the citizens forgot the monstrosities of war. Along with growing nationalistic feelings, the armament of two large powers, and economic as well as political rivalries were fueled. All theses aspects added to the hostility of the age and helped to give rise to WWI.

2. What was the specific cause of WWI?

the immediate cause of WWI was the assassination of arch duke Ferdinand of Austria by the Serbian Black Hand, a terrorist group. This lead Austria to declare war on Serbia, and in turn Serbia on Austria. Germany then backed Austria by giving the reasoning that they were both german nations and one supported the other.

3. How did the soldiers react as they went off to war? Why?

The soldiers were naïve and excited about the war. Because there had not been a war in such a long time, generations worth, many did not know the horrors and true destruction. It was similar to the chivalric era, where it was an honor to serve and defend ones country, and many were too naïve to understand war and its effects.
