School Personnel Selection and Evaluation Interviewing Section Assignment

Prepare six questions to ask a candidate for a teacher position. Specify the information you expect to learn from the candidates through each of the questions you ask.

  1. Are you the best person for this job? Why?
  2. This question will provide feedback on how the candidate feels he or she would fit into the organization.

  3. What professional growth activities are you involved in?
  4. The answer to this question may yield information on whether the candidate is a life-long learner and interested in growing professionally.

  5. Do you conduct self-evaluation or reflective practice? If so, what have you learned about your professional practice through reflection?
  6. The answer to this question could reveal information on the openness to improvement, new methods and strategies.

  7. What do you perceive as your professional strengths and weaknesses?
  8. The question could elicit information on the candidate’s awareness of areas that need improvement. It would clarify how productive their reflective practice is and if the candidate utilizes the information gained to improve professionally. Teachers with the belief that there is nothing ‘broke’ usually do not attempt to ‘fix it’.

  9. Other than a means of income, what will this job provide for you?
  10. This question would provide information on the candidate’s expectation of the position. It would reflect what the candidate valued professionally.

  11. How would your students describe you and your teaching?

The answer to this question would describe what goes on in the candidate’s classroom when the door is closed. It would supply information on teaching style, student teacher interaction and expectations. It could reveal the atmosphere the candidate maintains in the classroom.
