Civil War Story

Descendants of David Speegle, who had sons and sons-in-law fighting on both sides, involves an encounter one of David's daughters had with the Rebel Home Guards who came in search of her pro-Union brothers.

Some of the Speegle men and their friends were hiding in the nearby woods when Martha Beatrice Speegle looked out and saw several Home Guards riding into her yard.  As they proceeded to search the house and farm, Martha slipped out and poured water into their muskets.

Afterwards, she remembered the divided family loyalty and began to have agonizing qualms.  But, even as she reflected on her act, her borthers, unaware of their Rebel visitors, came out of the woods for food.  The Home Guards raised their muskets to fire.  At that moment her doubts vanished completely.

Another Civil War Story

Another Civil War story handed down in the Speegle family concerns the pro-Union ancestor who was hung three times by Confederate soldiers because he refused to divulge the where-abouts of his neighbors who were Yankee sympathizers.  Each time, his friends slipped out to cut him down after the Rebels had gone.  He lived to be past 90 and always took special delight in telling of his narrow escpes at the hands of the southern soldiers.
