These letters were written to John Schick (1860 -1933) and were given to Stella Roberts for the Schick / Kohl genealogy booklet that she prepared in 1971.

Dear Mr. Schick,

I am writing this letter for your mother, and wish to advise you that your letter of Jan 3, 1913 was received.  Your mother has wanted to write for some time, however, she is unable to do so.  She has been very ill with a kidney ailment and a mild stroke, however, she is feeling much better now, although she is feeling her age.  Your mother sends her thanks for your greetings for the New Year and wishes you and your family the best in the New Year.  Also greetings and best wishes for Aunt Gaeberle and Kohl.  Best of luck for your little boy, may God bless and keep him healthy.  We do not have much news for you.  Mrs. Frederich Schick has been dead for over a year now.  You probably already know this.  And that Mr. Frederick Schick lost his arm because of a blood infection.  Your mother has been living here in a home for several years.  Your sister Frederica Schick is also here iin the home.  She is feeling very good, except that she has severe headaches sometimes.  She sends her love also.  If you can, please write you your mother as she is very happy when she hears from you.

Now, however, I must close.  Best wishes to you from all of the sisters here at the home.  Also please accept my best wishes.

Yours very Truly,
Sister Raphael

P.S. Greetings from your mother Rosa Schick.  (this in the hand of Rosa Schick)

Dear Son, Daughter in law and Children,

Since my thoughts are always with you dear John, I feel that I must write to you.  From your last letter I see that you are doing well, and your family is healthy.  Everything is very good for me here at the home.  I can still pray and do my daily work.  I cannot ask for more from God at my age.  I still feel good and healthy and am able to go to mass every day.  You are probably able to do the same, however you have so much to do that you can probably only go to mass on Sundays.  I am getting older every day and since I am over 80 years old, I have to prepare myself for the last hour which can come at any time.  However I hope, God willing, to live long enough to reach my 90th birthday.  Dear John, the summer is again at an end and the harvest was very good.  The weather has been excellent and helped us a lot.  We are doing just about everything with machines now, seeding and mowing also.  The thrashing machine is working every day.  Although the war broke out on Aug 2nd and Germany is now at war with France, Russia and England at one time, we have not lost.  The biggest battles are yet to come.  But Germany will win.  Your sister Frederica is also doing very well here at the home.  However, she suffers from attacks of Rheumatism.  Your nephew Frederick receives a pension of 30 marks every month, since he lost his arm due to blood poisening.  His brick yard was sold for 17,000 marks.  Now he does not have so much business to worry about.  His oldest son is now also in the war.  Your friend Casper Sorg has sold his home to his neighbor and built himself a new home.  His oldest son is also in the war.  We have heard nothing about John Riehi.  Many new things have been happening here.  We have built a new chapel on the Kermark.  We even have bells in our church now.  To close, I wish you all good health and good luck to your family.  God willing all will go good for us.

Greetings to all of you,
from your Loving Mother, Grandmother and sister Frederica.

Waiting your return letter.
