Scientific Name
The scientific name for the leopard gecko is Eublepharis Macularius. Eublepharis means "true eyelid" and Macularius means "spotted".
Origin
Leopard geckos originated from Asia. More specifically Northern India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. Leopard geckos were imported from Asia to North America until the 1970's when importation of lizards was banned. Although some lizards still seem to slip through customs.
Size
Leopard geckos attain their maximum size anywhere between 10 months and 14months of age. Adult males will grow larger than the females attaining a length anywhere from 7 inches to 12 inches. Adult females will range between 7 inches and 9 inches. When they are first born the hatchlings range from 3 1/4 - 3 1/2inches. The first seven to ten months of a leopard geckos life is a very crucial time. As this is where most of their development takes place.
Number of Animals
Leopard geckos do not require the company of other cage mates to do well. A single leopard gecko will thrive and usually attain a larger weight and size. Remember adult males cannot be kept together in the same enclosure as they will fight. Usually resulting in loss of body parts or sometimes even death. If you want to breed leopard geckos it's best to keep one male with several females. A good ratio is 1 male to 3 - 6 females. But watch the females as sometimes they will fight over food.
