This is what we started out with. Imagine my surprise when I looked out the window and saw THIS leaning towards me. I called the power company.
The first guy showed up and asked which pole I had called about. Since the wind wasn't blowing, this one was straight and he coudn't find anything wrong. I showed him the pic (above) and he checked it and found it was rotten at the base. Then the wind picked up and he saw it teetering...and he sprung into action. He tied guide ropes on it in case it fell before the other crew got here with the new pole. Glad someone finally agreed that it was a scary thing.
After more workers showed up they unhooked the top wires and chopped the top off the pole.
After unhooking the rest of the wires they took off the guide ropes and down she came!
Here is the new pole. This truck had been sitting down the street waiting it's turn to back into my driveway. Now it's blocking traffic. I bet the neighbors were just loving this.
Now here is someone who was VERY MUCH enjoying this. It's not every day that three big utility trucks go in and out your driveway.
...and our driveway isn't very wide. He had a great window seat in the dining room. Trouble was, by the time he pulled in the fumes were pretty bad in there. You can see the diesel exhaust stack.
They had to dig the bottom 4 feet of the old pole out, so it was starting to get dark by the time they drilled the hole for the new pole. This is a 5-foot drill bit. They were getting cold, it was getting cold in the house and we were all hoping this would soon be over.
Our electric had been off for over 3 hours at this point. There was no hope of fixing supper, so I called Dominos. While I was picking up supper they set the new pole, so dd took this picture. When the camera flashed, the workers noticed she had taken their picture, so they posed for another one, but she didn't take it. I'm bummed. They were a really nice bunch of guys! :-)
