| This page has been created for Junior High School Students in my hometown of MC to learn about JHS in Japan. My expereince is by no means what all Japanese schools have, but I will try to be as broad as I can. Tanegashima is known for its NASDA Rocket launcher at the southern end, the first point of contact in History with the West, where guns were introduced into Japan. Recently many surfers make it down because of its clear water (Something not found around Kansai and Tokyo area) and uncrowded beaches. | Japanese Junior High Schools One of the major things in the Japanese Education system is the "We" in everything, whereas in America Education is to develop the Indvidual. 1. Slippers or Indoor shoes are worn in the building, This is to keep it clean, because students have to clean. 2. Students clean, there are no janitors. 3. Teachers and Principals also clean.. 4. Teachers change classes, students stay in one room all day long. 5. No lockers, compartmental boxes are in the back for thier bags. 6. Schedule, school starts around 8:10am and ends around 4:10pm and then 98% are in sports clubs. Some kids go to cram schools in the evening. Many get home by around 10pm-11pm at night and still have studies. 7. Teachers discipline, not principals. Usually by emberessing the student, rather than suspension or other measures used in American classrooms. 8. Students eat in the classroom, theres no cafeteria. They also serve the food. 9. School grounds are maintained by the teachers and students. Parents help two times a year. 10. No central heating or airconitioning. Its believed to build discipline in the students, teachers freeze a little too. Hokiado gets a month and a half winter vacation. 11. School Year: Starts in April and ends in March. Vacations: Winter Vacation - 1 week Spring Vacation - 2 weeks Summer Vacation - July 15th to Sept. 1st Homework is assigned during summer vacation. 12. Flowers are everywhere around the schools. The students plant and care for them. 13. No school buses. JHS students bicycle to school with safety helmets. Highschool students use scooters (or motobikes); 18 years old is the legal age for driving. 14. No social dances, unless you include japanese traditional dance. They have big sports festivals which every student participates in. 15. Graduation is in March. Its one of the saddest events. Its true when they say that even the toughest kid ends up bawling. 16. Entrance Exams into Highschools are tough. There are three kinds of highschools; private (really tough), higher and vocational trade schools. Some kids will end up leaving their families by boat to get a better education in the city. 17. Teachers where many hats. Teacher, Police, Parent, Club Leader/Coach, and Counselor. Whereas in American Schools Teachers are Teachers. Any problems that someone finds with a student outside of school is always blamed on the teacher. Thats why teachers are called "sensei" in Japan, only doctors, teachers and lawyers have the "sensei" name. |
