Israel Begins Pullout; Gazans Survey Debris - Hamas Joins Truce but Warns of Renewed Fighting
By Craig Whitlock and Jonathan Finer, Washington Post Foreign Service
Monday, January 19, 2009; A14
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/18/AR2009011800204.html

  • Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Dozens of Gazans have died awaiting Israeli medical care, by Robert W. Gee (6 September 2008).
... and this is since the truce with Israel. The article describes how patients are forced to spy for Israel in exchange for medical treatment, as per a report by Physicians for Human Rights-Israel.

  • Christian Science Monitor: Israel nudges Egypt to crack down harder on Gaza smugglers, by Liam Stack (5 September 2008).

  • Washington Post: Boats Depart Gaza After Aid Delivery, by Linda Gradstein (29 August 2008).
This article describes the peace activist boat that breached the Israeli blockade of Gaza to bring in aid and take out Palestinians who needed to depart for medical and other reasons. The activists included the head of ICADH, Jeff Halper, who was then jailed for his participation.

  • Washington Post: Gazans' Access To Care Faulted, by Linda Gradstein (5 August 2008).
This article describes in very diplomatic terms how Israel blackmails Gazans with medical needs to spy for Israel in exchange for medicine and treatment.

  • Washington Post: Scholars' Visas Revoked (5 August 2008).
These visas were for 3 Gazan scholars who Israel did not change its mind about. One other was under another program, and 4 others got through and were allowed to leave.

  • Kansas City Star: Palestinians unfairly hit by Israeli policy in Gaza, by Yaser Wishah (4 August 2008).
American-Palestinian Yaser Wishah describes his direct experience of Israeli collective punishment while visiting Gaza last year, as well as many of the general features of the Israeli blockade which punish many Gaza residents who are uninvolved with the struggle with Hamas.

  • Washington Post: As Israeli Siege Strangles Gaza Strip, Hamas, Smugglers Profit Off Tunnels, by Griff Witte (18 June 2008). This article describes the tunnel system through which goods are smuggled into Gaza to relieve the suffering caused by the Israeli seige. The article also describes those who are profiting off the tunnel system including Hamas, while the people continue to suffer. The article also describes that Hamas's popularity is diminishing because of the seige.

  • Washington Post: Rice Urges Israel to Desist on Settlements, by Griff Witte (16 June 2008). This article describes Condeleeza Rice's frustration with Israel refusing to halt settlement expansion and how this is a major obstacle to reaching a peace agreement by the end of Bush's term. The article also describes Rice's failure to win exit visas for all 7 Gazan Fullbright scholarship winners.

  • New York Times, Disputed Blast in Gaza Kills 5, by Isabel Kershner and Taghreed El-Khodary (13 June 2008).
This article described the explosion of a home in Gaza which killed numbers of militants but also a baby girl. Initially it was thought to be from an Israeli missile, but that is now in doubt. In the meantime there has been an exchange of fire with rockets launched at Israeli towns and militants being killed in Gaza by Israeli fire from the air.

  • New York Times: Israel to Loosen Limits on Gaza Scholars, by Ethan Bronner (6 June 2008).
This article describes Israel reversing its policy on denying exit visas to Gaza students who have won scholarships and grants to study abroad under pressure from the US State Dept (but only for a limited number). This started with Israel denying visas to winners of Fulbright scholarships - the most prestigeous of US academic awards. Israel states it wishes to squeeze Hamas, but it also wants to eventually have a neighbor that is highly educated, and it had not previously considered academic scholarship to be a humanistic need. Unfortunately this article does not mention the accusation of collective punishment against Israel's strategy which is illegal according to international law because it punishes the innocent, and is also considered to be counter-productive because it radicalizes the population and hurts international relations with the perpetrator because of the punishment of innocents.

  • Washington Post: Israeli Man, Palestinian Child Killed In Attacks Pair Died in Violence Between Jewish State, Fighters With Hamas, by Griff Witte (6 June 2008).
It was remarkable to note how in this article's description of the violent 3-way wrestling match between Israel, Abbas and Hamas, no mention was made of Israel refusing to halt settlement expansion, which makes a viable Palestinian State virtually impossible. It was truly biased and misleading to accuse Abbas of threatening the peace talks by making overtures to Hamas when those talks are virtually already dead because of Israel refusing to halt settlement expansion in violation of its agreements made at and following the Annapolis Summit.

  • Chicago Tribune: Rice orders U.S. to restore Fulbrights to Gaza students (3 June 2008).
This article describes the policy reversal from the State Dept. which originally supported Israel's refusal to issue exit visas to the 7 Gaza students who won Fulbright scholarships. The original policy can be seen as a support for Israel's polcies of collective punishment against the people of Gaza, even if they are innocent of the crimes committed by the few.

  • Los Angeles Times: Students trapped in Gaza: Israel's policy of not allowing Palestinians with scholarships to study abroad is ill-advised, Los Angeles Times Editorial (3 June 2008).
This editorial protests the Israeli policy denying students exit visas to pursue study abroad just because they are Gazans. The article even describes protest within Israel, where it has been labeled collective punishment and counter-productive as it turns more young people against Israel and toward sympathy with Hamas.

  • Washington Post: Israel: U.S. Reverses Stance On Gazans' Scholarships (3 June 2008).
This article describes the reversal of policy ordered by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to actively oppose Israel's policy of refusing to issue exit visas to 7 winners of Fulbright scholarships, as an unneccesary measure to halt terrorist actions against Israel. The Israeli Supreme Court also asked the Israeli military to review its general policy against allowing students to exit Gaza for educational purposes.

  • New York Times: State Dept. Reinstates Gaza Fulbright Grants, by Ethan Bronner (2 June 2008).
This article describes the probable success of the US government in pressuring Israel to award exit visas to the seven Fulbright scholar winners who live in Gaza, but also describes the broader context of Israel prohibiting students in general who live in Gaza from exiting to other countries for advanced study.

  • Chicago Tribune: Blockade puts Gaza scholars in limbo: U.S. prodding Israel on Palestinian travel, by Richard Boudreaux (31 May 2008).
This article describes the controversy swirling around Israel's policy of denying exit visas to Gazan students who win scholarships to study abroad. Even people within Israel are protesting the policy calling it an example of collective punishment because it punishes innocent civilians, and counter-productive as it turns people against Israel and toward Hamas.

  • Washington Post: Israel revisits limitations on Gaza students, by Griff Witte (31 May 2008).
This article describes Israel's policy of denying exit visas to Gazan students who had won scholarships to study abroad as part of their policy of trying to pressure Gazans into getting rid of Hamas, but which is protested by both US Secretary of State and many Israelis.

  • New York Times: U.S. withdraws Fulbright grants to Gaza, by Ethan Bronner (30 May 2008).
This article describes the US initial impulse to support Israel refusing exit visas to US Fulbright scholarship winners in Gaza.

  • Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Gaza sewage crisis threatens Israel as waste flows north , by Robert W. Gee (25 May 2008).
This article describes an example of Israeli collective punishment that backfires.

  • New York Times: Suicide bomber attacks Gaza crossing, by Isabel Kershner (23 May 2008).
This article describes the positions of the Palestinian militants who keep up violent attacks on Israeli positions with the idea that this will somehow stop the Israeli embargo of Gaza, but then the Israeli response is to tighten the emgargo.
