"THE NEWS"

  • Washington Post: From Israel, a Call for Patience: Rushing Peace Process Invites Violence, Foreign Minister Says, by Linda Gradstein (22 August 2008).
Foreign Minister and others proclaim peace deal impossible by end of year, that it cannot happen while Hamas is in power, that Palestinian refugees will not be allowed in Israel, period, only in new Palestinian State, and that rushing toward peace might bring violence.

  • Philadelphia Inquirer: For 60 years, Israel's battled enemies & misconceptions, by Stu Bykofsky (19 May 2008).
In Mr. Bykofsky's op-ed, he laments the anti-Israel bias he sees in the reporting of the Western media, especially recent reporting about emerging support for the one-state solution, which he sees as the end of the Jewish State. He then asks why doesn't the Jewish state have the right to exist?

  • Miami Herald: Mideast coverage is a matter of perception, by (18 May 2008).
This article by the Ombudsman of the Miami Herald describes the struggle of the newspaper to report about the Middle East fairly and without bias, but admits to a degree of failure because (1) communications and living conditions being better in Israel make it easier to report from there and hence its point of view is easier to access, (2) there is much greater interest in Israel and its point of view in the Miami region, and (3) the Palestinian point-of-view is not well promoted in that area and hence has to be actively sought out by the paper. Even so, we should remind the Herald that part of being accurate is describing the inequality of the situation, even though in a certain way this might be misconstrued as a bias against the group responsible for the greater part in doing negative things, it is not biased if it is accurate. In other words, Israel is doing so much worse things (the ethnic cleansing of the nakba, the wall, the settlements and checkpoints, stealing Palestinian-owned lands for Israeli civilian usage, discrimination within Israel, collective punishment and massive violation of human rights such as massive deportations to surrounding countries, greater violations of UN resolutions than any other country including a rogue nuclear weapons program, etc., etc.) than the Palestinians are to Israelis. This is not to defend the rocket attacks and suicide bombers - they are clearly illegal by international law, but by every measure they cannot compare to the mulitude of crimes and the huge scope and intensity of those crimes committed by Israel against the Palestinians. Reporting this greater quantity, scope and intensity on the part of the Israelis is a matter of accuracy even if it seems to be biased against the Israelis - but it is not biased simply because it is accurate.
