Halflings stand about 3 feet tall and usually weigh between 30 and 35 pounds. They have brown or black eyes. Halfling men often have long sideburns, but beards are rare among them and mustaches almost unseen. Halflings prefer simple, comfortable, and practical clothes. Unlike members of most races, they prefer actual comfort to shows of wealth. Halflings reach adulthood in their early twenties and generally live into the middle of their second century. Halflings speak Halfling and Common.
Halflings prefer to fight defensively, usually hiding and launching ranged attacks as the foe approaches. Their tactics are very much like those of elves but place more emphasis on cover and concealment and less on mobility.
• +2 Dexterity, –2 Strength.
• Small: As a Small creature, a halfling gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but she uses smaller weapons than humans use, and her lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character.
• Halfling base land speed is 20 feet.
• +2 racial bonus on Climb, Jump, and Move Silently checks.
• +1 racial bonus on all saving throws.
• +2 morale bonus on saving throws against fear: This bonus stacks with the halfling’s +1 bonus on saving throws in general.
• +1 racial bonus on attack rolls with thrown weapons and slings.
• +2 racial bonus on Listen checks.
• Stereotypical Alignment: Chaotic Neutral
• Automatic Languages: Common and Halfling. Bonus Languages: Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Goblin, and Orc.
• Favored Class: Rogue. A multiclass halfling’s rogue class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing.
SUBRACES
The information above is for the lightfoot halfling, the most common halfling variety. There are four other major halfling subraces, which differ from lightfoot halflings as follows.
Dobies are more numerous than any other race of halfling but are also least likely to adventure, living in small hamlets and villages and so are ironically the least encountered of the halflings. Dobies are a little less than 3’ feet tall and weigh between 35 and 55 pounds. They generally speak a smattering of all sorts of languages in addition to Common and Halfling. Dobies look like humans only half the size though tending to be a spot more portly.
Dobie Traits (Ex): These traits are in addition to the lightfoot halfling traits, except where noted.
— +2 Constitution, +2 Charisma, –2 Wisdom, –2 Strength. This replaces the lightfoot’s ability score
— Dobies have a nose for food and when detecting food gain the use of the Scent ability, they gain a +4 to survival checks used to find herbs, mushrooms, pastries and other ready to eat foods. Living animals do not qualify.
— +2 racial bonus on Perform checks. His trait replaces the lightfoot’s +2 racial bonus on Jump checks.
— Second wind: Any time a dobie fails a save which results in non lethal damage, fatigue, or exhaustion, a dobie may make second save in the next round to attempt to save. This replaces the lightfoot +1 racial bonus on attack rolls with thrown weapons and slings.
— +4 racial bonus on listen and spot checks. This replaces the Lightfoot bonus to listen checks.
— Stereotypical Alignment: Lawful good
— Automatic Languages: Local Common and Halfling. Bonus Languages: Any (like humans). This replaces the normal languages of a halfling
— Favored Class: Knight. A multiclass dobie’s knight class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing.
These halflings are shorter and stockier than the more common lightfeet.
Deep halflings are about 2-1/2 tall and weigh between 30 and 35 pounds. Deep halflings speak Dwarven fluently.
Deep Halfling Traits (Ex): These traits are in addition to the lightfoot halfling traits, except where noted.
—Darkvision out to 60 feet.
—Stonecunning: Like dwarves, deep halflings
have a +2 racial bonus on checks to notice unusual stonework. Something that
isn’t stone but that is disguised as stone also counts as unusual stonework. A
deep halfling who merely comes within 10 feet of
unusual stonework can make a check as though actively searching and can use the
Search skill to find stonework traps as a rogue can. A deep halfling
can also intuit depth, sensing the approximate distance underground as
naturally as a human can sense which way is up.
— +2 racial bonus on Appraise checks and Craft checks that are related to stone or metal.
—Deep halflings are less athletic than lightfoot halflings and do not have a racial bonus on Climb, Jump, and Move Silently checks.
Riverlings are more numerous than any other race of halfling but are also least likely to adventure. Riverlings are a little less than 5’ long tall and weigh between 65 and 80 pounds. They generally speak a smattering of all sorts of languages in addition to Common and Halfling. Riverlings have long sleek bodies that end in awkward webbed feet.
Riverling Traits (Ex): These traits are in addition to the lightfoot halfling traits, except where noted.
— +2 Constitution, +2 Dexterity,–4 Strength. This replaces the lightfoot’s ability score
— Riverling’s base speed is 10ft and swim speed 40ft, this replaces the normal movement of halflings.
— Riverlings have a nose for food and when detecting food gain the use of the Scent ability, they gain a +4 to survival checks used to find herbs, mushrooms, pastries and other ready to eat foods. Living animals do not qualify.
— +2 racial bonus on Perform checks. His trait replaces the lightfoot’s +2 racial bonus on Jump checks.
— Hold Breath: a riverling may live in the water most of the time, but she still breaths air.
— +2 racial bonus on spot checks. This replaces the Lightfoot bonus to listen checks.
— +12 racial bonus on swim checks. A riverling may take ten on swim checks even when stressed. This trait replaces the lightfoot’s +2 racial bonus on Jump checks.
— Stereotypical Alignment: Lawful good
— Automatic Languages: Aquan and Halfling. Bonus Languages: Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Goblin, Local Common, and Orc.
— Favored Class: Bard. A multiclass riverling’s knight class does not count when determining whether she takes an experience point penalty for multiclassing.
Tallfellows are somewhat rare among halfling folk. Tallfellows are 4 feet tall or more and weigh between 35 and 45 pounds. They generally speak Elven in addition to Common and Halfling.
Tallfellow Traits (Ex): These traits are in addition to the lightfoot halfling traits, except where noted.
—
+2 racial bonus on Search, Spot, and Listen checks. Like an elf, a tallfellow who merely passes within 5 feet of a secret or
concealed door is entitled to a Search check as though actively looking for it.
This trait replaces the lightfoot’s +2 bonus on
Listen checks.
—Tallfellows are less athletic than lightfoot halflings and do not have a racial bonus on Climb, Jump, and Move Silently checks.
