PROLOGUE

The story you are about to read is not unique, it has happened many times before, and will happen many times in the future. Stories of vengeful brothers, elves, dwarves, kings, knights and their swords are as old as time itself. Since man has learned to speak he has spoken of men greater than themselves, men who have done deeds that surpass imagination, men whose names will never die: HEROES. One of those great men was Blaylock, the adopted son of a family of dwarves. His story begins many years before his birth. It starts with the birth of twin sons to Nhoj and Adnil, the king and queen of the kingdom of Lazader

King Nhoj and Queen Adnil ruled fairly over their land and for this the people loved them dearly. When Adnil gave birth to twin boys, the people rejoiced greatly for they knew that the fair rule of their beloved king and queen would surely continue. As the brothers grew older, however, their personalities became unquestionably different. Giehl, the older of the two, had a kind heart and was strong-willed yet gentle. He possessed a powerful intellect, a strong body, and a keen wit. Zager, Giehl's junior, was disobedient, rebellious, mischievous, and reckless. He took it upon himself, at every opportunity, to belittle the subjects of his father's kingdom. He treated the servants of the castle poorly and chastised them constantly.

Nhoj and Adnil had noticed this difference from the very beginning and had both decided that Giehl would be the land's next ruler. On the twins' eighteenth birthday Nhoj and Adnil announced to their kingdom their decision to have Giehl rule the kingdom after their reign was over. The people of the land rejoiced, for they knew of the twins' difference in demeanor. But, Zager was not pleased with his parents' decision and objected forthright in front of the entire assembly. For his outburst, Nhoj ordered that because of his actions against the people of Lazader, his rebellion against authority and the evil in his heart, he be banished from the kingdom forever.

Adnil was distraught over the thought of never again seeing her son. Even though she knew the evil in his heart, she loved him still as her son. She pleaded with Nhoj not to banish Zager, but to allow him stay, if not within the castle walls, then at least within the city. Nhoj was fervent in his decision. He argued that if Zager stayed, he would continue to terrorize the people of Lazader. Also, he could not back down from a proclamation made in front of his people. Adnil begged that if Zager was to be banished, that he be allowed to return from time to time so that she could see him. Nhoj loved his wife and did not like seeing her in such agony, but his decision was final. But for the love of his wife, he told her that Zager would be allowed to return, but only twice.

Nhoj went to Zagers chambers and told him this; that he was banished from the kingdom of Lazader forever just as he proclaimed, but that Zager would be allowed to return only twice. Zager was to return on the day of his brothers coronation as king and to visit Giehl upon his deathbed. Zager, angry at his father for all but disowning him, refused to ever return to this land. Nhoj explained to Zager of his mothers love for him and of her wishes. He also explained his decision and its finality. Nhoj asked Zager to promise to return as he had instructed. As evil as Zager may have been he still loved his mother. For that, and that alone, Zager promised to Nhoj that he would return as he wished.

With that, knowing that from that day forward he was on his own, Zager packed his few meager belongings, mounted his horse, and left the kingdom of Lazader as fast as his steed could carry him.
