Calamianes Islands - Palawan
Busuanga - Coron - Culion - Linapacan

Calamianes lies in the southeastern section of the Philippines’ 7,100 islands. It is located on the nothernmost part of the province of Palawan known as the country’s Last Frontier. Comprised of four major municipalities namely Coron, Busuanga, Culion and Linapacan, Calamianes is famous for its natural diversity of flora and fauna and its tourism assets, gifted with natural white-sandy beaches and outstanding coral reefs ideal for diving and snorkeling.
It is also known to be the home of World Class dive spot for wreck diving experience of the World War II Japanese Shipwrecks sunken by American Forces on September 1944. Moreover, this municipality is also exceptionally gifted by natural hot springs, volcanic lakes, more than 500 caves with intact stalactites and stalagmites, colorful coralline areas with various fish species, and outstanding landscapes and seascapes ideal for photo hobbyist and travelers.

The community as well has more to offer of its cultural and traditional practices. The Indigenous People of Coron is widely known as Tagbanwas. Tagbanwas live in Coron Island lying in the southeastern section of Busuanga Island, Northern Palawan,. It is a wedge-shaped limestone island, comprising the Calamianes Group of Island, bounded on the north by the Coron Passage, on the west by Coron Bay and on the east and south by Sulu Sea.

Composed of 23 island and inland barangays, Coron has a total population of 32,243 as of year 2003 comprising minority groups dominated by cuyonens, and tagbanwas, as cuyunon and tinagbanwa as their respective dialects. Fishing serves as the major source of livelihood and became the major industry of the municipality since 1970’s. While the Tagbanwas since time immemorial have been trading balinsasayaw (edible birds nests) with the Chinese traders until
the present time. The Tagbanwas were the first inhabitants of Coron. Some 5,000 years ago, they came here as a part of the second wave of Indonesians who migrated to this country. They have dark complexion and are slightly lighter in physique and shorter in height than the average Filipino with Malayan ancestor. They are paganistic and nomadic in nature.

Today, part of Coron’s pride is the recognition and granting of Ancestral Domain and Ancestral Waters to our natives duly signified by Certificate of Ancestral Domain Claim from the Philippine Government. To record, it is the first in the world where the Ancestral Waters was included in the Indigenous Peoples’ claim.

With the continuing support of the Local Government, the community has also took its initiative in establishing Marine Parks & Sanctuaries to protect the fragile marine ecosystem and further enhance the quality of tourists destination for reef diving and snorkeling in the area.
