| Mars is the fifth to the Sun in our Solar System. It was named after the vicious Roman god of war which in Greek mythology is named Ares. It has two small moons, in fact, which are the smallest moons in our Solar System. The names are Deimos and Phobos. In Greek and Roman mythology, Deimos and Phobos are the two horses on Mars' (Ares) chariot that is why Mars' moons were named Deimos and Phobos. Deimos is the smallest of the two moons. Mars has some amazing features, including the largest point and longest canyon in the Solar System. Olympus Mons is the largest point in our Solar System, even taller than Mount Everest and much taller than Mount Everest too. It is 336 miles wide and ten miles higher than Mount Everest. Valles Marineris is the longest canyon in our Solar System. It is 5,000 miles long, 240 miles wide, and 6.5 miles deep. If it was place on Earth, Valles Marineris would stretch from one side of the United States to the other! Life on Mars? Scientists think that there was life on Mars, a very very long time ago though. If there was life on Mars, then the creatures that lived there would be very small since even long back there was hardly any water in Mars. Can WE live on Mars? The answer could be yes and no. We could terraform Mars and make it so that there is more oxygen on Mars and also change it's atmosphere. Now, there are astronauts going to Mars. |
