...forgive my innocence...
yet another collection of the ramblings of a college freshman
College... Is it all that it's cracked up to be?!

Well everyone, at Gramma's request, here is my account of my first two weeks of college.

The first week was filled with s0-called "ice-breakers" where we were forced into uber-social situations, and told the same things over and over and over again: "take good notes", "meet as many people as you can", "use your resources", "your professors are your friends",  and of course "go to class!" Now, none of this was really news to me. But I think I had a social overload, because I don't feel like meeting anyone anymore.

As for my roommate, her name is Jessie Sjol. She's originally from Wyoming. And we pretty much get along great. Neither of us is feeling insanely social, so we pretty much just hang out with each other. Her boyfriend from Wyoming, Coulter, is here too. He's nice. So yeah, its all good.

So far, my classes are all great.  I'm up to 19 units now, which I know is insane. But, you can help me out with that later....

Anyways. My first class, Monday morning, is Calc 3. The class is pretty easy, we just talk about stuff, take notes, play with play-doh, and play on Macs until class is over. As much fun as that sounds, it is still very much a high math course. And, to keep the standards up, the homework for this class is very extensive. I'm talking 15-20 problems, some of which have multiple parts, and all of which require a written explanation in addition to the mathematics. Luckily Jessie is also taking this class, the session after me, so not only do we share one book in class, but we also do our homework together which, I think, is the only reason we're getting through it so far.

The rest of Monday (and also Wednesday and Friday) consists of my Intro to Programming: C++ class, and Intro to Electronic Music (MW only). Programming so far is very easy. We haven't had any homework except for some reading. But today in class, we wrote our first little C++ programs. They were rudimentary at best, but I was excited. The computer did what I told it to do! So I'm really looking forward to the rest of that class. Electronic music so far has just been a study of the science of sound, which I enjoy very much, and also how to electronically manipulate and duplicate sound. The class is supposed to be very lab intensive, with us spending lots of individual time in the studio. I have my first studio time on Friday, so that's exciting! Our first project is Simple Sentence Splicing. We have to record a sentence and then cut it up into words and individual letter sounds to make a new sentence. Hehe. I'll let you know how that goes.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are shorter, but less interesting. I have Intro to Philosophy at 11:30, and my First-Year Seminar, Understanding 20th Century Germany, at 1. I'm thinking about dropping Philosophy because it has a writing requirement that I don't need, and that is only going to bog me down. My seminar has this writing requirement also, but I can't do anything about that class. Plus, my seminar is the only class in which I actually know the people, because I had the class during orientation week, and we all had dinner at my professor's house. So, I like that class. I like it except for the impending research paper.

Finally, on Wednesday evenings, I have Community Choir. This is the sect of the University Choir that is open to the public, I think by audition. I'm not sure. I have the first meeting of this class on Wednesday, so more on that next time.

I guess that's it about classes. The food is ok. Its a step up from regular cafeteria food, but the choices aren't always so great. I'm getting used to it though. I'll definitely get my money's worth out of it, at least out of breakfast. I can get a fresh, custom omelet for 2.75 every morning. Definitely the highlight of my day, when I decide to wake up for it. :)

I finally got my laptop back, which is exciting. My Ipod should be done next weekend, and hopefully my car will be done this week. I'm not going to get into that fiasco right now, but everyone keep your fingers crossed that it gets done soon.

Alrighty, I've got to go finish my readings for tomorrow. Hope this was insightful. Feel free to leave comments, questions, whatever, and be sure to vote in my poll! I've got to make that decision soon!

Love you all! Call or Write!

Thanks Mary! Once you start a blog...well inquiring minds want to know. I saw pictures of you moving in on the family website. Your room looks pretty small. Hope you have a common room to go to for relaxation and tv. Drop the philosophy. It can be interesting but if not needed it seems far removed from the rest of what you are doing. However...variety is good. I'm always here for advice :)....love you, gma
