HENNEPIN COUNTY LIBRARY “OFFICIALLY WITHDRAWN” MEETING SEPTEMBER 18, 2008 EDINA LIBRARY Attendees: Roger Burg, Cathy Chastek, Pat Chisenhall, Sue Colten, Vicki Dunn, Linda Engberg, Bill Erickson, Evelyn Gross, Linda Jennings, Margie Knoedel, Pat Kulseth, Sandy Louis, Helen McNulty, Donna Meade, Fran Parkinson, Bob Rohlf, Doris Skalsted, David Smith, Sharyll Smith, David Waldemar HCL Outreach presenters: Lin Maki, Daniel Marcou, Chaleng Lee (The Edina Library staff joined the group to hear the Outreach presentation.) Call to order: Linda Engberg called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. at the Edina Library. Welcome and introductions – everyone introduced themselves. Marcia Wattson, Edina Library, welcomed everyone and gave an overview of the activities at the Edina Library. The Edina Friends of the Library gave $5000 for programming this year. The very successful programs included “Great Decisions” and “The Bible as Literature”. Writing workshops, such as “Memoirs for 55 plus” have been given. “Edina Reads” in is its fourth year. HCL Outreach presentations: Lin Maki described the “At Home” services. Sixty volunteers bring materials to eighty customers. The Outreach staff sends out material by mail to 700 people. The “At Home Reader” is delivered to 3000 people and is also available in libraries and online. She also described Deposit Collections, Booktalks at Collection sites, Bi-Folkal Kits, and Adult Learning Centers. Dan Marcou talked about his “Services to Corrections” work. He brings materials and takes requests at the Adult Corrections Facility, where he has started a “Freedom Ticket” newsletter that describes ways to use the library on release from incarceration. Outreach staff also provides material for the Adult Detention Center, the Juvenile Detention Center, and the County Home School. Dan showed a poetry publication written by 12-18 year- olds at the County Home School. Chaleng Lee spoke about Outreach’s “Recent Immigrant Service”. Three staff liaisons work with Spanish speaking people, African people, and Asian people. Chaleng works with Asian people, especially the Hmong community. Services include computer classes, phone lines and other work with recent immigrants. More information can be found on the HCL website. Secretary Report: Minutes of the May 15, 2008 meeting had been distributed (electronically and paper copies). Roger Burg moved to accept the minutes. Pat Chisenhall seconded. Minutes were accepted. Treasurer Report: Previous Balance 5/15/08: $587.27 Income: $240.55 Expenses: $139.53 Balance 9/18/08 $688.29 Linda Jennings moved to accept the report. David Smith seconded. Report was accepted. Reports: Archivers – Sandy Louis reported that the group has written several HCL individual library histories. Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth, Maple Grove, and Rockford Road are some the histories that are done. Members of the group are working on Excelsior, Minnetonka, Brookdale, Oxboro, Westonka, Hopkins, and Champlin. Sandy told the group that anyone interested in volunteering to write a history should contact her. Displays – Sandy Louis encouraged everyone to think of ideas for displays. There is a need for realia. New Business: Linda Engberg encouraged everyone to think of sites for future meetings and to contact board members (Linda Engberg, Chuck Kritzler, Pat Kulseth, Sandy Louis, Sharyll Smith) with ideas. Locations should be convenient, have enough parking, and possibly be near a busline. The three meetings for 2009 will be on February 19, May 21, and September 17. Oral History Tapes – Attendees viewed an interview of Lora Landers. She spoke of her experience in New York, Europe, Minneapolis Public and HCL. She worked with collection development in her early HCL years- 1965 and on. She wrote many policies. Attendees also viewed an interview with Leonard Piha and Charles Larson. Leonard began work with the library in 1954, Charles in 1963. They spoke of experiences with circulation, driving, purchasing (Charles), and maintenance supervision (Leonard). The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting will be on February 19, 2009, place to be announced later.
