Pakistan Association Celebrates Chand Raat.

The Pakistan Association of Greater Washington Metropolitan Area celebrated Chand Raat on Saturday, December 15, 2001 at the Summit Hall in Gaithersburg, Maryland. A large cross-section of the Pakistani-American community estimated to be over 2500 enjoyed sampling of traditional food, shopping for the Eid and getting mehndi applications. The gathering was entertained by the live band "Sur Celebration", with Aamir and Uzma.  Anwar Sheikh served as the emcee. Raffle prizes and special gifts for the children were given out.


 
 

A feature of this event was the presence of a larger number of guests from our larger American community who joined in the festivities. Among a number of notables were Congresswoman Connie Morella, Rep. Bob Ehrlich, and Montgomery County Executive Mr. Doug Duncan.. A number of elected officials, both Democrat as well as Republicans, attended the event.  Among those present were   Montgomery County Council President Steve Silverman, Maryland Sate Senator, Mr. Chris van Hollen and Mr. Ike Leggett, member County Council.

 Mr. Marvin Masterson, Maryland Assistant Secretary of State & top aide to Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy-Townsend presented a letter of appreciation to the Pakistan Association from the Governor, State of Maryland, Parris N. Glendening. The citation was received by the Association President, Lubna Ejaz. . Another citation was presented to Dr. Jamshed Uppal, past President of the Association, in recognition of his community services.
The Pakistan Association is a non-profit, community-supported organization, unaffiliated with any political party or advocacy group. Although the Association does not endorse particular candidates it is our goal to inform the Pakistani American community as to pertinent political issues and to provide a forum for debate and discussion.
