| Today, in too many countries, it is dangerous business to be an environmentalist. In democracies and dictatorships, in developed and developing economies, the basic human rights of environmental activists are being abused. Many have been beaten and arrested for speaking out against environmentally destructive practices by their governments. Others have been murdered or executed for organizing against powerful logging and oil interests. The goal of Amnesty's Just Earth! program is to shine a light in the places where human rights abuses are being committed against environmental activists, and to immediately take action to stop the abuses. |
