The Analysis of Human Mind and Behaviour

by Pukhtoon Khan

Brain is the central processing unit of human body. It is the factory of human thoughts, ideas as well as feelings and emotions. Brain produces human thoughts and also controls human behavior and actions. Brain is the control room of human actions because all actions whether they are instinctive and reflexive or intelligent and intentional are the products of brain. Brain is the home of mind and mind is the salient and distinctive quality of brain.

Mind has two distinct levels viz Conscious and Unconscious.

a) Unconscious is the dominating part of mind. It is the backend of human mind and is source of all human urges, instincts, desires, feelings and emotions as well as creativity, innovation, memory and extra sensory perception (ESP). Unconscious mind is also said to be the home of the most powerful human urge and motivating force which is said to control all human actions though that motivating force has been differently interpreted by social scientists like Adler, McDougal, Freud, Jung, Marx and Rafiuddin .Unconscious mind is still being explored.

b) Conscious which constitutes less than ten percent of mind, is the front end of human mind. It acts like a translator or P.R.O or P.S to the unconscious and performs the following functions:

1.Translation of unconscious desires

2.Justification and intellectualization of unconscious desires with help of logic

3.Presenting unconscious desires to society in socially acceptable forms

4.Linking the unconscious to external world

5.Executing the orders of the unconscious using human body

Man expresses himself in speech, writing and behavior. Speech and writing are the expressions of human conscious mind which is the source of thought. Thought is infact the struggle of conscious to understand the desires and urges of unconscious. It may or may not understand and interpret what unconscious wants. If it understands and interprets the desires of unconscious correctly then human personality prospers due to internal peace and satisfaction. In such case there is synchronism between conscious and unconscious.

Unconscious expresses itself fully and man enjoys the benefits of all those latent and potent faculties of unconscious, the sanction and activation of which are at the sweet discretion of unconscious. On the contrary if conscious misunderstands and hence misinterprets the desires and urges of unconscious mind then there is a conflict between conscious and unconscious and man has to face the consequences of this conflict in the form of mental anxiety, dissatisfaction, tension, guilt feeling and depression.

Behavior is the expression of unconscious mind, which in turn is the source of all human actions. Man falls prey to confusion and develops the disease of hypocrisy if his thoughts are not in synchronism with his actions. The progress, development and nourishment of human personality and the genuineness of ones behavior depends upon the complementary relationship of thought and action.

The root cause of psychological diseases like anxiety, tension, depression and frustration is the conflict between conscious and unconscious mind which manifests itself in the contradiction between thought and action. Therefore in order to have a balanced and normal personality it is extremely important for every human being to act in accordance with his thoughts. Human character and personality is the output of human action consistent with one's thought and ideas. Therefore those ideas which prove to be beneficial for the collective progress and nourishment of a nation culminate in the collective progress of a nation and make it a useful unit of humanity.
