How it started

Elena and Anton started skating together in March 1996.It wasn't an ordinary partnership, and as both said later, it just started as recreational skating. It might sound strange to someone unfamiliar with their story, but considering the circumstances this is the only way this partnership could start. Earlier that year, Elena had suffered a severe head trauma while practicing with her former partner , Oleg Schliakov in a Riga skating rink, and immediately had neurological surgery.Her life was saved, but the accident left her with physical and speech problems .So yes, only the fact that she and Anton stepped on the ice that season was more than a miracle! 

As they say, a friend in need is a friend indeed .Elena was already Tamara Moskvina's student, and she had been training in St Petersburg from the beginning  of the season.There she met Anton who was  skating with Maria Petrova , and they befriended. After the accident  Anton and his family  took  care of her and the rest is history..

Did you know?

Elena likes to paint .She particularly loves drawing portraits.She studied in Art school twice a week when she and Anton were training in Hackensack , NJ, and she even sketched president Putin during the post olympic team meeting.( There are screen captures from that in the gallery)

Anton likes to play tennis.He is saying Elena hasn't decided to try it yet, but he is sure she will someday.(info from russian tv)
