Author's Ramblings
When most people think of zombies they think of the usual thing: mindless, soulless, corpses being reanimated and walking the Earth once again with an undeniable hunger for fresh brains, or the entire body of its target. They don't feel pain, and the only way to take one out is to destroy the brain. Recently, zombies recieved an update and shifted from being the shambling, slow moving stalkers into vicious, speedy killers that will relentlessly hunt their target down unless they, or their target, perishes. But all in all, zombies have remained the same over time.

The concept for Zombie came from a question I heard in a dream of mine. "What if the classic zombie was the end result of something much greater?" Zombies belong to the old school monster classic club, along with vampires, werewolves, mummies, etc. Vampires, werewolves, and mummies have all evolved over time in what they can do. They have been interpreted in different ways, with vampires being able to break one of their main retrictions which is the inability to walk around in the sunlight. However, zombies have remained more or less the same...until now.

The Setup

Zombie is set in current time and enters the life of 16 year old Kyle Bradshaw, an average teenager with an average life. He prefers video and computer games over sports, is heavily into horror movies, and dabbles every now and then by writing his own stories and scripts. His high school life is one of infamy, due to a rumor spread during freshmen year that he is gay. He is not without friends, however, who are fellow outcasts for one reason or another.

One evening, on his way home from work, Kyle is cornered by five students who have tormented him throughout his high school life, and were responsible for starting the rumor. They are not happy with him due to an altercation earlier in the day that wound up getting all of them suspended from school and possibly kicked off the football team. They only plan to scare him, but the scare turns into murder when Kyle is accidentally stabbed. Terrified of their actions, and even more terrified of the truth getting out, one stab turns into many. Kyle barely clings to life as he is hauled off to the seclusion of a nearby forest and left for dead.

Help unexpectedly arrives in the form of Ryan, another young man who happened to be passing through the forest. Knowing that help wouldn't arrive soon enough to save him, Ryan asks Kyle a question:  "Do you want to live or do you want to die." Kyle chooses to live, and when his eyes open next he quickly finds out the price he has to pay for his decision. While he still looks human, has the needs of a human, and can interact like a human, he is no longer human. He is a Risen, or zombie, and has been gifted with new amazing abilities and a life of eternity. The catch: he is dead. Death for a Risen begins in the brain. As long as it is sustained, the body will remain healthy. If it is not sustained, it will begin to die, and the body along with it. And the only way to sustain it is by ingesting fresh, healthy brains.

Kyle must now come to terms with his new existence and learn to leave his old life behind. He is part of a new world now in which Risen are not the only "supernatural" things that exist, and that they all share a common enemy in the form of the US Government, whom have recently discovered the existence of "others" in the world.
