Faux finishes
There are many different types of faux finishing. Here are samples of just a few.

One of my favorite rooms our home is the space that will soon be an office. My husband is a geologist, thus the fossils carved into the wall. I did this with a plaster finish then painted over top adding depth with varying colors. The faux stone ceiling hides a number of flaws in the stipple.
A 'Venetian plaster' effect can be  accomplished at a much lower cost using regular drywall compound.  Adding the pillars and archways  gives the feeling of 'old Rome'.
Faux marble is a nice effect over an entire room or even just in a niche.
