HI! My name is Stanley and I am a complete novice at this, but I am learning. I am 43 years old, single, never married. I hope as time goes by and I learn more about my computer and the internet, my page will become more interesting. Any help would be extremely appreciated.
I live in Tuscaloosa Alabama where I currently work in home repair-remodeling-painting. (I really am a jack of all trades, I find it easy to learn how to do things) When I graduated high school I wasn't ready for college so a friend's father hooked me up with a job as deckhand for a towboat company that ran boats on the river that runs through Alabama. I did this for 6 years. It wasn't to bad a job, great pay! and it was interesting working and living on the river for 20+ days at a stretch. We ate any thing our hearts desired all we had to do was put it on our grocery list. Most of the time it was uneventful, but when it rained alot and the river rose it could get a little scary. The towboats that I worked on would push 6 barges, each weighing approx. 6000 tons. During normal weather we would chug along downstream at about 7 miles per hour, in high water our speed would increase up to 10-12 mph . These speeds my not sound very impressive but when you consider the size of our tow (6 barges 36000 tons) and the small size of the river we traveled on, in some stretches we only had about 50 feet of water on each side of the tow, we were in extreme danger of colliding with the bank of the river or with the many bridges we navigated under. Boy have I been going on, but the river gets in your blood. One more thing about it though, trains had to stop for towboats at bridges, I still love that.
After being laid off, I moved to Colorado Springs, Co. where I have a brother and sister in law. I really loved it there, it is one of the most beautiful states in the U.S.A. and the diversity of the people made it a great change from Alabama. In Colorado I got in the food service business starting out as a cook then bartender and ending up in a supervisory position for a major hotel corporation. All was well until my mother contracted cancer and I decided that it was best for me to move back to Alabama and be with my mom in her last bit of time with us. I'm obviously still here but I do go to Colorado regularly to see my good friends there, that I am grateful I have. |
