Anise (Pimpinella anisum)

Anise is a great expectorant, and is effective at breaking up mucous associated with colds. In addition, it is used to help treat flatulence. Recipe: Boil 1 Tbsp. of Anise Seeds in 1 Cup of Water. Pour through a small strainer. Drink as a tea.

Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

Sweet Basil is great for indigestion, constipation, nausea, headaches, fevers, colds, and flu. Recipe: Boil 1 Tbsp. of Basil, and 4 Peppercorns in 1 Cup of Water. Pour through a small strainer. Drink as a tea.

Bay Leaf (Laurus nobilis)

Bay leaf is useful in the treatment of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, sprains, and inflammation. Recipe: Heat 2 Bay Leaves with 1 Tbsp. of oil (Canola or Olive Oil will do). Cool until warm to the touch. Remove Bay Leaves. Rub into arthritic joints, or area of inflammation. Be careful not to apply when hot, or it may burn skin.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula is used in the treatment of ulcers and fevers. It also helps relieve menstrual cramps. Recipe: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie into a bag) place 1 Tsp. of Calendula Flowers. Steep in in a tightly closed container with 1 Cup of Boiling Water. Drink as a tea.

Caraway Seed (Carum carvi)

Caraway seed is useful in the relief of indigestion, gas, and relaxing nerves. Recipe: Boil 1 Tbsp. of Caraway Seed with 1 Cup of Water. Allow to cool and pour through small strainer. Take 1-2 Tbsp. as needed for relief.

Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum)

Cardamom is useful in the treatment of indigestion, gas, diarrhea, and headaches. It is a popular ingredient in Chai Tea, known for its warming effects to the body. Recipe for Chai Tea: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie into a bag) combine 1 Tbsp. of minced Ginger, 8 Cardamom Seeds (crushed), 4 Peppercorns, 1 tsp. of Cinnamon, and 3 Cloves, and a dash of Nutmeg and Allspice(optional). Steep with 1 Cup of Boiling Water. Add 1/4 cup milk and continue to simmer for 8 minutes. Add 2 drops of vanilla extract, and 1 tsp. of honey.

Catnip (Nepeta cataria)

Catnip is good for treating diarrhea. It is also an effective diaphoretic when experiencing a cold or flu. Recipe: In a small bag of cleese cloth or coffee filter (tie in a bag) place 1 Tbsp. of Catnip. Steep in 1 Cup of Boiling Water, in a tightly cover container. Drink as a tea.

Chamomile (Chamomilla recutita)

Chamomile has highly effective calming properties. In addition, it is used to help digestion, diarrhea, and menstrual cramping. Recipe: Boil 1 Tbsp. of Chamomile with 1 Cup of Water. Pour through a small strainer. Drink as a calming tea or add a small amount of graded ginger while boiling to help relieve menstrual cramping.

Cinnamon is effective in the treatment of indigestion, gas, diarrhea, and cramps. Recipe: Simmer 1 tsp. of Cinnamon in 1 Cup of Milk. Add 1 tsp. of Honey.

Clove (Eugenia caryophyllata)

Cloves provide quick relief of tootaches. Recipe: Heat 5 Cloves in 1 Tbsp. of Oil (Canola or Olive Oil will do). Allow to completely cool. Apply to area around tooth. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) - Coriander is useful in reducing fevers. Recipe: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie into a bag) combine 1 Tsp. Coriander and 2 Peppercorns. Steep with 1 Cup Boiling Water.

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum)

Cumin has great benefit to the heart and uterus. It is effective in helping women produce breastmilk after childbirth. Recipe: Scramble 2 eggs with 1 Tbsp. milk. Cook eggs in frying pan with cooking spray. Combine 1 Tsp. Cumin and 1 Tbsp. of Water. Add to eggs. Allow to simmer 5-10 minutes. Salt and Pepper to taste. Add 1 Tbsp. toased Pine Nuts (optional).

Dandelion Leaf (Taraxacum officinale)

Dandelion leaves are an effective diuretic. They help in fluid retention and weight loss. Recipe: Boil 1 Tbsp. of Dandelion Leaves with 1 Cup of Water. Pour through small strainer. Drink as a tea.

Dillweed (Anethum graveolens)

Dill is effective of abdominal pains and cramping, colds, coughs, and flu. It also helps to increase milk production in nursing mothers. Recipe: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie in a bag) place 2 Tsp. of Dillweed. Steep in 1 Cup Boiling Water, in a tightly covered container. Drink as a tea.

Fennel(Foeniculum vulgare)

In addition to being an expectorant, Fennel can also be used to relieve gas, cramps, and bloating. Recipe: Boil 1 Tsp. of crushed Fennel Seed in 1 Cup of Water. Pour through small strainer. Drink as a tea.

Fenugreek (Trigonella foenumgraecum)

Fenugreek is useful in the treatment of lung congestion, ulcers, diabetes, and gout. It is also said to be an aphrodisiac, and rejuvenator. Recipe: Gently simmer 2 Tbsp. of crushed Fenugreek in 2 Cups of Water for approximately 45 minutes, until liquid is reduced to 1/2 the amount. Pour through small strainer. Drink as a tea.

Garlic (Allium sativum)

Garlic has a multitude of benefits. It is good for fevers, colds, and flu. It is also good to treat aches, sprains, and inflammation. It can also be used to treat earaches. Recipe: Place 1 Cup of minced Garlic in a mason jar, and pour enough Olive Oil to completely cover Garlic. Close lid tightly, and place in warm area for 4 days. Shake contents 2-3 times daily. Strain through a tightly woven cheese cloth, press to increase the volume of Garlic Juice going through. Store in a cool place. For colds and flu, take 1 Tsp. every 2 hours as needed. For aches and sprains, gently rub into area needed. For earaches, insert 2-3 drops into the ear with a dropper of piece of cotton.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale)

Ginger is a great detoxifier. It can be used to treat colds, flu, cramps, and nausea. In addition, it is a diaphoretic and it is helpful in increasing blood circulation. Recipe: Simmer 1 Tbsp. minced Ginger in 1 Cup of Water. Pour through small stainer. Add 1 Tsp. of Honey and Lemon to taste.

Juniper Berries (Juniperus communis)

Juniper Berries are effective in treating urinary problems, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and flatulence. Recipe: Boil 1 Tsp. of Juniper Berries in 1 Cup of Water. Pour through small strainer. Drink as a tea. Do not use this recipe if you pregnant.

Lavender (Lavandula augustifolia)

Lavender is a great antidepressant, and it has great calming effects. It also has effective healing properties for the skin. Recipe: Boil 1 1/2 Tsp. of Lavender and 1 1/2 Tsp. of Chamomile in 1 Cup of Water. Pour through small strainer. Drink as a tea before bedtime to help insomnia. Recipe #2: For cuts or burns apply 3 drops of Lavender Essential Oil to a bandage, and apply bandage (or bandaid) to affected area.

Marjoram (Origanum majorana)

Marjoram is great for relief of cramps and nausea associated with menstruation. Recipe: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie into a bag) place 1/2 Tbsp. of Marjoram. Steep in 1 Cup of Boiling Water.

Nutmeg (Myristica frangans)

Nutmeg is useful in relieving indigestion and nausea. Recipe: Warm 1 Cup of Milk, add 1/8 tsp. of Nutmeg and 1 Tsp. of Honey. Simmer for a few minutes longer. Allow to slightly cool. Parsley (Petroselinum sativum) - Parsley is effect for freshing the breath, helping digestion, urinary inflammation, and lung conjestion. Recipe: Chew 1 or 2 sprigs of parsley after a meal.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary is great for relieving headaches. It is also used to treat indigestion, gas, and nausea. It is also a great tonic for the hair and scalp. Recipe: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie into a bag) place 1/2 Tbsp. of Rosemary. Steep in 1 Cup of Boiling water in a tightly closed container. Drink as a tea. To use as a hair and scalp tonic, double the amount of Rosemary steeped in Boiling Water. Allow to cool, and use as a rinse after you shampoo.

Sage (Salvia officinalis)

Sage is a good antiseptic, and is used to treat sore throats and ulcerations in the mouth. Recipe: In a small bag of cheese cloth or coffee filter (tie into a bag) place 1 Tsp. of Sage. Steep in 1 Cup Boiling Water in a tightly covered container. Allow Sage Tea to cool. Gargle 3 times daily.

Spearmint (Mentha spicata)

Spearmint is effective in treating colds, flu, fevers, indigestion, gas, and cramping. Recipe: Boil 1 Tbsp. of Spearmint in 1 Cup of Water (you can also use 4 sprigs of fresh Spearmint). Pour through small strainer. Drink as a tea. (You can also use Peppermint as a substitute.)

Thyme (Thymus vulgaris)

Tyme is a great antiseptic. It is useful as a mouthwash or cleansing agent for the skin, and is effective in the treatment of skin fungi, such as athlete's foot. Recipe: Mix 1/4 Cup of Tyme with 1 Cup of Vodka and place in a mason jar. Allow to sit for 2 weeks. Shake contents daily. Pour through small strainer. Store in mason jar. Use as mouthwash, or apply to affected skin area with cotton.

Tumeric (Curcuma longa)

Tumeric helps relieve menstrual cramps and it help to regulate the menstrual cycle. Recipe: Warm 1 Cup of Milk, add 1 Tsp. of Tumeric, 1 Tsp. of Sweet Almond Oil, and 1 Tsp. of Honey.

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis virginiana)

Witch Hazel, which is easily found in your local drugstore, is effective in healing cuts, treating hemmoriods, treating variose veins and enlarged pores. Recipe: Apply Witch Hazel to affected area using a piece of cotton.

Marjoram: is my favourite essential oil to use in my massage practice. It is so very good at soothing tense muscles and easing cramped or muscle spasms. Because of these muscle-relaxing tendencies, Marjoram is useful for dealing with headaches caused by tense neck and scalp muscles. Historically, the Romans used Marjoram for mood elevation, calling it the "herb of happiness". The Greeks called it "joy of the mountains". They believed it increased longevity and comforted departed souls. The French use Marjoram for many things, including muscular issues, support for the respiratory system, and toning the nervous system. In addition to using Marjoram with my massage clients, I use it in self-massage. I just rub a drop or more on the muscles that are sore, tense, or in spasm. Can Curry Cure Cancer?

Below is a great recipe if you want to start using this powerful spice on some or your food preparations:

Uncle Mike's Turmeric Chicken Cha Cha This recipe will give you a big dose of turmeric. Remember, the active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. When you go to the store to get your spices look for turmeric, you will not find curcumin. I use Spice Islands brand but there are usually others available depending on the store. Be careful with this spice as if you get it on your clothing it is very hard to remove.

Mix equal parts of soy sauce and light olive oil together in a bowl.

Pour Soy/Olive oil mixture over chicken breasts and let them marinate for a few hours.

Prepare a spice mixture of 3 parts turmeric and 2 parts garlic powder.

Cover the marinated chicken with the spice mixture (I just sprinkle it on with a salt shaker).

Bake for one hour at 325 degrees

Remove and cook on grill for 4 minutes on each side over medium heat.

The last step is optional but is my favourite step during the summer season. If you don't use the grill then bake for about an hour and fifteen minutes
