* Special Bell's Palsy Exercises *

Try doing these exercises in front of a mirror, ( admittedly very discouraging at first but extremely good to help out) repeat each one 10 times and try to do the entire set at least 15 times a day.

1. Drink all liquids through a straw. You'll be dribbling all over yourself for a few days but it does help the muscles around the mouth;

2. Sniff strongly. Wrinkle your nose. Flare your nostrils;

3. Curl lips up and raise and protrude upper lip. Try to touch your nose;

4. Compress your lips together. Pucker lips together & attempt to whistle;

5. Blow air into cheeks, attempting to keep mouth closed ( like blowing a balloon ). Shift air from one cheek to the other;

6. Smile without showing teeth, then smile showing your teeth;

7. Try moving your lips into a smile slowly. Then, pucker slowly trying to use equal strength from both sides;

8. Draw angle of your mouth upward so as to deepen furrow from side of nose to side of mouth;

9. Harden ( wrinkle ) the chin. ( " stick out " the chin like a boxer ). At first, you will probably have to manually push your muscles into place to do the exercises;

10. Using the fingers tip, tap from the jaw along the bone line to the centre of the top lip. Return the tapping motion to the jaw;

11. Tap along the lower jaw to the centre of the lower lip. Return to the jaw a tapping motion to the jaw;

12. Tap along the lower jaw along the chin line & back to the jaw;

13. Using your index finger and thumb, pull the corners of your lips in toward the centre. Slowly and smoothly, push out and up into a smile. Continue the movement up to the cheek bone. Use a firm pressure;

14. A make up brush or a soft tooth brush can be used for the cheek, jaw and lips stimulation;

15. Put a large button on a string. Place it under your lips. Pull the string. Try to hold it with your lips. Move the bottom to the right corner, pull & resist. Repeat on the left side;

16. Chew gum;

17. Chew and suck on ice;

For only your eyes:

1. Placing 4 finger tips on the eyebrow, rub using a firm & slow stroke up to the hairline. Return downward to the eyebrow;

2. Using the finger tips, place them on the cheek, tap lightly and slowly along the bone under the eye to the bridge of the nose. Return tapping along the cheek bone to the side of the face;

3. Raise your eyebrows and hold for 5 seconds. Wrinkle your forehead;

4. Try to close your eye slowly;

5. Frown & draw your eyebrows downward;

6. Close your eyes tightly. Wink with one & then, the other eye to the best you can;

7. Open your eyes widely, close than again and open.

I have added my own techniques I feel, are VERY helpful:

1. VERY IMPORTANT, DO NOT BE SCARED TO TOUCH & MASSAGE YOUR FACE, THIS IS A DOWNFALL TO MOST PEOPLE;

2. Massaging your face will help in stimulating the nerves and do not let any neurologist tell you that the nerves have died ( " Nerves Do Not Die " );

3. Take a warm facecloth & vigorously rub your face for several minutes 2 to 3 times a day;

4. Massage your entire face with some body cream / lotion ( works wanders on your shin too! );

5. Open your mouth as wide as you can, leave it like opened for a few moments, repeat;

6. Tighten your neck for a few seconds, repeat;

7. Sing the song " old MacDonald had a farm " or just mouth the words. Singing this song, will use every muscles that you have in your face;

8. Massage the back of your neck & behind your ears. This will really help with the pain;

9. Sleep with a damp facecloth over the affected eyes;

10. Get into the habit of taking a couple of Vitamin B-12 and / or a B complex every day till its gone;

11. Take one Cod Liver Oil Capsule every day till the pain and problem is gone;

12. If you have a chance, see an Osteopath ( is a doctor with extra knowledge with nerves dislocation and / or pinched nerves ) or a Chiropractor. Combined with an Acupressurist who knows special acupressure technique to relive Bell Palsy, it is the key to your recovery;

NOTE: Remember to keep your chin up as it will eventually go away. It can get tough & depressing at times but hang on. Things may look worse to yourself than others. Keep Smiling and Laughing a lot!!!!
