| Dawn, the first rays of light sneak through the city. Disturbing the cosmopolitan birds and the sensitive insomniac businessmen. In a north-facing room, unaffected by the arrival of this daybreak, lie two friends. Lovers. Listening to the sounds of their embrace. Breathing in unison. Hearts in counterpoint. Their minds are filled with no more than the basic humm of the building. A radiator buzzing, or maybe a machine in a distant flat. Maybe. What does it matter? This is a seperate world. But a warm one: a sanctuary from the grey everyman's land beyond these dimly lit walls. It will be like this forever. This place will always exist, no matter where they go. This is how it will end: everything will vanish, leaving each with only the shrapnel of an exploded love for company. * * * His scream does not carry beyond the ring of candle light, but it wakes him from his customary dream, as it does every morning. He used to cast around for the source of his nightly torment. But now all he cares is this: when he awakes she is still beside him. Still smiling. |
