L'Aleixar borders on the north with Vilaplana, on the NW and NE with La Mussara's eld area, on the NE with L'Albiol, on the east with la Selva des Camp, Almoster and Castellvess, on the west with Alforja and Maspujols , on the south with Riudoms and Reus, on the SE with Castellvell and on the SW with Maspulols.
Historic evolution (of the village):
The first historical testimonies of the village gigan to tade shape once Siurana's reconquest was fulfilled. There are many versions about the etymologic origin of the village's name. The most approved one is that which considers L'Aliexar, as comming from the Aravic name: Al-aisar, mianing "the fertile" or also "fertile land". It is also said that l'Aleixar was born under the protection oj an Arab "masia" (*1) with the meaning of "little Saracen fort.(*1) Catalunya's typical rural house.
Interesting Places:
St. Martí's Parish Church, is already named in a Papal Bulleting dated on 1194. The building has a rectagular shape, it is 30 meters long and 19.5 meters wide, the walls are made of stone and mortar. The baroque front door below a well-preserbed shield of the village was made in 1725. To the right side of the church's front there is the bell tower composed by three quadrangular bodies made of the same material as the nest of the building.![]()
Inside, the church is diveded into three naves: the central one, wider, and two aisles with retables simulating chapels.
You can also find the baroque organ, 18th C, glaced above the second chapel of the seft-hand sede aisle, quite near the choir where the singers were placed (it is worth mentioning that nowadays there are singers, besides the organ, accompaning the masses).L'Aleixar's baroque organ is nearly the only one well-preserved in this area..
