In My Sweet Audrina  , V.C. Andrews writes a chilling story of a parents' role of keeping their children safe from harm.
Audrina Adelle Adare lived with her parents, Damian Jonathan and Lucietta Lana Adare.  Along with Lucietta and Damian, Audrina's aunt and cousin, Ellsbeth and Vera Whitefern, lived with them.  Audrina was 7 years old at the time, but had no recollection of her life before  she hit seven.  She could not remember her age, Vera's age, the day of the week, or even the  year.  She was not permitted to go to school, for the woods were a dangerous place for a special little girl, Like Audrina.  Audrina grew up in the shadow of her dead sister, Audrina.  The first Audrina was born on the same exact day, yet hine years before the second Audrina.  She was forced to sit in her dead sister's play room, which was kept as a shrine.  She sat in her rocking chair, for hopes that she would get her dead sister's gifts.  For many years Audrina had to live in her sister's shadow.  Audrina's mother and aunt home schooled Audrina when she was younger. This made her slightly envious of her cousin, Vera, whom was permitted to go to school.  When Audrina was 9 years old, Lucietta gave birth to another daughter, named Sylvia.  Tragically, Audrina and Sylvia's mother passed away after giving birth.  After Lucietta's tragic death, Audrina decided to fulfill her mother's dream to become a famous pianist.  At first, Damian was against it, but then decided to let her take lessons, for she can free her time.  Vera was jealous of Audrina natural talent and had a crush on Lamar Rensdale, Audrina's piano instructor.  Vera was permitted to take lessons, as well, but Damian and Ellsbeth did not know of her hidden agenda.   Vera and Lamar had a secret love affair and a 15-year-old Vera had gotten pregnant.  She had a miscarriage and then ran away.  When Sylvia was two years old, she finally came home from the hospital.  Sylvia was born premature and mentally handicapped, whom was now to be Audrina's responsibility.  After hearing a verbal confrontation, Audrina learned that Vera was actually her and Sylvia's half-sister.  She also found out that Ellsbeth and her father were lovers and Lucietta took his eyes of her sister.  The argument of was over her plans to go to Vera, whom moved to New York with Lamar.  Vera was in trouble and Ellsbeth wanted to get to her , before her and Damian's devious daughter wreaked havoc on her own family.  Vera was a very spiteful girl and turned out to be a vindictive young woman.  Ellsbeth was finally allowed to leave, but had a tragic fall down a flight of stairs and died. Before Ellsbeth's fatal fall, Audrina was finally permited to go to school.  This was due to a conversation between Lamar and  Ellsbeth.  Lamar threatened to contact DCFS and turn Damian in.  Also, Audrina befriended a boy, named Arden Lowe.  She and Arden got to know each when Lucietta was pregnant with Sylvia.  Arden's mother, Billie was famous skater, until a tragic accident in which  both of her legs were amputated.  Before her aunt's tragic death, Arden and Audrina became engaged and got married immediately following Ellsbeth's death.  She and Arden decided to elope and not tell her father about the news.  They got married and took Sylvia with for their wedding and "honeymoon."   When they returned back to Whitefern, Arden and Audrina were shocked that Damian moved Arden's mother  into their home.  Damian was disappointed that Audrina got married and  made innuendos about his displeasure.  A couple of months after Audrina and Arden got married, Audrina caught Damian and her mother-in-law  in bed together.  This infuriated her, for she felt that her father was using Billie for his own selfish needs, like he did Ellsbeth and Lucietta.  After a conversation with Billie, Audrina began to understand why Billie was mesmerized and grateful to Damian.  Around the holidays, Vera returned to what was once her home.  She was a beautiful young lady and even became a R.N.  At first, Damian did not want her to stay at his home, but Billie talked him into letting his "niece" stay there.  Vera got Billie to trust her and even began to have Damian trust her.  They all believed she changed, except for Audrina.  Audrina knew that her half-sister had a few tricks up her sleeve.  Tragically, Billie died after a tragic fall.  This was the second unexplained fall that has happened  at Whitefern.  Everybody started to believe that Sylvia had something to do with both accidents.  They believed that she was jealous of anyone else who had Audrina's attention.  Arden even suspected that his mentally handicapped sister-in-law had something to do with his mother's fall. Audrina could not help but agree, even though deep down she knew that Sylvia was not capable of such a violent act.  After Billie's death, Audrina got real sick and depressed.  Arden tried to get her to snap out of it, but none of the members of her household could snap her out of it.  She went inoto the first Audrina's play room one day and rocked in the rocking chair.  She began to have visions of her sister's brutal rape, but started to see more details.  She got up from the chair and left the playroom and suddenly fell down the flight of stairs that brought her aunt and mother-in-law to their deaths.  She did not die, she was in a coma for about a month.  Not realizing that Audrina might be able to hear , Arden and Vera began talking about their affair.  Audrina was heartbroken, but of course could not respond.  While in the coma, she had visions of the first Audrina's rape and realized that  there was fourth boy, hiding behind a tree.  That little boy was no other than, Arden Lowe.  She could not understand why Arden did not run for help and save her sister.  Vera demanded Arden to choose between her and his wife.  Deep down, he was only interested in his satifaction when it came to Vera, but he was deeply in love with Audrina.   Audrina fought hard to wake up, but was unsuccessful in the beginning.  One day after realizing that Vera was going to attempt to kill Audrina and then have Sylvia and Damian comitted into an asylum, Audrina woke up.  Still weak, she got Sylvia's attention.  Sylvia brought the cart that Billie used to get around and Audrina put herself into the cart and had her 13-year-old sister push out of the  room and hide Audrina from Vera.  Vera got alarmed when Audrina was not in the room and automatically assumed that Sylvia did something with Audrina.  Hearing the rucus in hte house, Damian and Arden found Sylvia with Audrina and realized that Audrina was very much alive.  They rushed her to the hospital just in time and Audrina was not going to die.  This was big relief to Damian and Arden.  However, Audrina did not want anything do with her husband, for he betrayed her and "The First Audrina".  Arden tried to plead with Audrina to give him a second chance, but she refused to even look at him, even when they finally brought her back home.  When she was in her home, she demanded to hear the truth from her father about  the attack that led her sister to her death.  She wanted to know if Arden was the little boy behind the tree.  She already knew the answer, but wanted to hear it.  After his confirmation, Damian decided to finally tell his daughter the truth about her sister's attack.  After describing Audrina coming home after the rape in the middle of her 9th birthday party and the way that Lucietta tried to wash away the dirt, Damian revealed the whole truth.  He thought that Audrina would have figured out  the truth  as he told the story of the horrible attack.  Audrina thought that Vera was the first Audrina, but was completely wrong.  After she guessed, Damian finally revealed that there was never another Audrina before her, Audrina was the first and only.  Uudrina lived her life in the shadows of her own rape and memories.  She found out that after she was raped, her parents decided to wipe her memories by electric shock therapy.  That is why she could not keep track of time, date, or years.  She needed to have proof that her father was telling the truth, after all the lies that were told to her by her own family.  She dug up the grave that was supposedly Audrinas to ensure that there was a body in it.  To her dismay, there was not an actual body in it.  She finally had the proof that she needed and was  angry with her father and husband.  After the relevation, she had a final vision of the rape and realized that Vera was the person who orchestrated her attack.  She accused her and Vera blantantly admitted that she did not know that she would have been disobediant to ealk through the woods to get home.  That was a confession that Damian needed to hear, for he suspected that she took part in his precious daughter's brutal attack.  He could have murdered her for this, but she fell down a flight of stairs when he confronted her.  She had too many internal injuries and died.  Vera had fragile bones as it was and that is waht brought her to her death, along with her jealousy and hatred towards Audrina.  After Vera's death, Audrina decided to leave the only home she knew , with out her husband.  She left Sylvia with their father, for she was his responsibilty, not Audrina's.  After she started her father's car, she had a strange premonition that caused her to stay at Whitefern.  Her premonition was that when Damian passed away, Sylvia would be placed into an asylum.  She did not want tto live with that and vowed to protect her sister from their father's "protecitive" ways.  She still did not think that she would be able to trust her husband, but she wanted to find out.

In my opinion, this story was very powerful.  I honor Damian for his love for his daughter, but disagree with the tactics to rid her of her memories.  This story portrays a parent's way of protecting his or her children, but also shows how over doing it could affect a child.
