Praying Mother

Late one night, a young man got into some trouble with the law.  He was an accessory to a serious crime.  Even though he didn't actually commit the crime himself, he was arrested and taken to jail.

After being booked and fingerprinted, he called his mother and said "Please help me get out of here".  His mother, as always, went to his rescue.  She posted bond and accepted responsibility for him. Then, she hired a lawyer.

After reviewing the information of the case, the lawyer said, "I'm afraid you could be facing some serious jail time, and the judge that's handling the case has a reputation for being really tough, but I'll do what I can."

Needless to say, neither the young man or his mother felt very optimistic as they left the lawyer's office.  The young man looked at his mother and asked, "What am I going to do?"  She replied, "Son, we'll put it in God's hands;  he's your best hope."

Every morning, afternoon, and night , the little mother went to her special place to pray, kneeled before God, and prayed for her son.  As the court date grew closer the prayers became more intense and tearful.

Then the night before he was to be sentenced, the young man stood quietly outside his mother's bedroom door and watched his mother kneel at her special place to pray.  Tears came to his eyes as he heard his mother cry and pray:

My precious, dear heavenly Father, Thank You for the wonderful gift you bestowed upon me when you gave me my son, and Thank You for all the years that he's been blessed with good health and a good mind, and for all the love, happiness, and sunshine he's brought into my life.  Lord as you know, my son made a terrible mistake, and he's in serious trouble.  He has expressed remorse to me over and over again, but Lord, you know his heart.   Lord, please speak to the judge's mind and spirit and soften his heart, so that he will show mercy on my son tomorrow.  In the precious name of Jesus, I pray.  I love you, and I thank you Lord.

                                  Amen

Even though the young man had been raised in church, he never fully believed or participated.  He was just there with his mother.  And even though his mother's display of love through her prayer touched his heart so deeply, he didn't believe it would make a difference. So as the hour grew closer and closer, he became more nervous.

The next morning when the judge asked him to step forward to receive his sentencing, he began to tremble all over.  His mother leaned over and whispered in his ear, "Trust the Lord, Son."  The walk from his chair to the judge's bench seemed so long.  He felt as though he was walking to his doom.

The judge said sternly, "Son, you know you were an accessory to a serious crime?"  The young man, in a trembling voice, replied, "Yes Sir."  Then the judge said, "By law this carries a stiff penalty and every part of me would like to impose the maximum sentence."  Then the judge paused and shook his head and said, "But I just can't, because every time I consider your sentence, I see a praying mother beside you and my heart softens."  The judge proceeded to pass the minimum sentence and included, "Don't let me see you in my court room ever again."

Very relieved that he wasn't going to jail, the young man ran over to his mother, hugged her, and said, "Thank you Mom!"

She said, "Don't thank me, son. Thank the Lord. I couldn't reach inside the judge's heart, but God did."

For the first time in his life, the young man now believed in God.  After all, he had witnessed God's power first hand.  Church became a whole new experience for him as he grew closer and closer to God.

About five years later, he became a minister and continues to work for the Lord today.
