Problem: "Error 52: A script is being disposed and there is a cloned
object that is still using a class in it". Happens in the swamp while
fighting the Chernovy.
Reason: Basically, this error is caused by your system running too fast for the game. QG 4 was
written before today's faster computers existed. It was programmed on slower systems. There
are areas in the game that have timers in the programming and require scripts to be played
out at certain speeds. These areas of the game have trouble on fast systems and generate
this error 52.
Solution (DOS):
Exit the game. From the Quest for Glory 4 directory on your hard drive, run
INSTALL and choose IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH.
Save these choices, restart the game, and restore a game before the swamp. From the
swamp, go left three screens, then down two screens. Kill the monsters and get out as fast
as you can. If this doesn't work, restore a game saved earlier and try again.
Solution (Windows):
If it still doesn't work, delete the MS-DOS version, install the Windows version, and play the
game in Windows. Be aware that if you want to play the Windows version, you'll have the start
the game over from the beginning, since the saved games are not compatible between DOS
and Windows. Error 52 can also occur in the Windows versions, but there have been reports
that one work around is to get to the edge of the swamp, save game, then start as many other
programs as your computer can handle. This can often slow down your computer enough to
get you by.
MoSlo and Turbo:
Another solution: If you have the DOS version of the game installed, copy Mo'slo onto the root
directory of your C: drive. Then, Shutdown the Computer and Restart in MS-DOS Mode. Type
in "CD\" and press ENTER. Then type "MOSLO /30 C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM" and
press ENTER. Change to the game directory (for example, you may need to type "CD
C:\SIERRA\QG4CD" and hit ENTER). Then type QG4CD and press ENTER to start the game.
If you have the Windows version of the game installed, you can try to use Moslo from a DOS
prompt within Windows. Please note, however, that on some systems you may not be able to
use Mo'slo this way. Copy Mo'slo onto the root directory of your C: drive. Click on Start, then
go to Programs, and then click on MS-DOS Prompt. Type in "CD\" and press ENTER. Then
type "MOSLO /30 C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM" and press ENTER. Now, minimize the
DOS Window (do not close it) and start the game as you normally would.
For the Windows Version being played on WIN95, you can use a utility called TURBO,
available from www.shareware.com amongst other places on the web. Try setting the of
normal to about 70%. If error 52 happens again, lower it to 50%.
If you are still having the same problem with the game, it may be that your saved game has
become corrupt or it may be that you saved at a point too close to where the error occurs. If
this is the case, you will need to restore the game from a previous save.
For those of you who have the latest QFG Collection, there are some saved games on the
CD. Depending on whether you are playing the DOS or Windows version of the game, the
saved game files can be found here: DOS D:\SAVES\QG4DOSCD\2 Windows
D:\SAVES\QG4WINCD\2\
(This assumes "D" is your CD-ROM drive letter. If this is not the case, please substitute the
appropriate CD-ROM drive letter.)
Tampering with the CMOS:
Heres another method, but it requires you to tamper with your computers basic setup.
(Thanks to Lord Dagger The Hero for the write up).
DON'T TRY THIS UNLESS YOU ARE VERY COMFORTABLE WITH DOING THIS - AND
YOU HAVE THE COMPUTER SYSTEM MANUAL IN HAND. YOU CAN MESS UP YOUR
COMPUTER PERMANENTLY IF YOU DONT DO IT EXACTLY RIGHT!
Okay, this method involves toying a little with your computer's inner workings, but it won't
have any lasting effect (except escaping the error) if you re-enable the memory cache (see
below).
1. When you boot up your computer, press F2 (or escape, or whatever key it says to hit so
you can enter setup) to enter setup.
2. Go to "Advanced options" (THIS VARIES WITH EACH BRAND OF COMPUTER)
3. Highlight "Memory cache" (SOMETIMES CALLED L2 CACHE)
4. Press enter. 5. Highlight "Disable" and press enter.
6. Exit setup and save changes.
7. Enter QFG4.
8. Load a saved game BEFORE you entered the swamp.
9. Turn detail all the way up.
10. Turn volume all the way down.
11. Turn speed all the way down.
12. Turn skill all the way down.
13. Enter the screen with the Chernovies using acrobatics if you have that skill. If not, try
something else like glide spell)
14. When you reach the Chernovies, kill them with spells, rocks or daggers. Do NOT enter
close combat.
14a. Make sure you do NOT cast reversal, as this triggers the beloved error. If you need to
rest, go right ahead. The game will let you. Healing potions and the paladin's healing ability
are also useful.
15. Once you kill the Chernovies, retrive the ritual from the tomb (I won't say how to get the
ritual. That's a game puzzle).
16. Exit the screen to the north.
17. If all goes well, you should escape the screen with the ritual and without the error. At this
point, save your game.
18. After saving, exit QFG4 and turn off your computer. Follow steps 1-6 except for step 5
highlight "enable" not "disable".
19. Enter QFG4 and load the saved game after you killed the Chernovies.
20. Exit the swamp.
21. Enjoy QFG4!
If all of this fails, about your only choice is to find a slower computer (maybe a friend has a
486-66mhz hed let you borrow... OR
Use a Slower PC via a Volunteer:
Ask someone on this board to use HER/HIS slow computer to get you past this part of the
game. Ive done that for many folks. What YOU have to do is bring your character to the edge
of the swamp BEFORE the problem happens. If youre playing the DOS version of the game,
from the Quest for Glory 4 directory on your hard drive, run INSTALL and choose IBM PC
INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH. Save these choices, restart
the game, and restore a game before the swamp and save your game in a NEW directory.
Email that saved game AND the other file (glorysg.cat) that is in that NEW directory and tell
the person who has volunteered to help you whether you are playing in DOS or Windows
(error 52 occurs less frequently in Windows, but the saved games CANNOT be used from the
DOS version).
If youre sending the DOS version of the game, make sure the volunteer knows to configure
his/her system to IBM PC INTERNAL SPEAKER for MUSIC and NO AUDIO for SPEECH.
Its also helpful if you tell your *volunteer* what type of character you are so he/she knows
how to fight.
Also be PATIENT, the volunteer might have a *life of their own* so dont expect your Friday
night email to be answered the next morning -it might take a few days!
The volunteer will then enter the swamp, fight the two Chernovies, get the ritual, and get back
to the edge of the swamp and save the game. Then he/she will email the two files back to
you. Put these in the SAME NEW DIRECTORY you had the original two files. Fire up the
game and point it back to this new directory. Continue the game as usual. If youre playing
DOS, you MIGHT be able to go back and change your settings BACK to the original ones you
had to improve sound and music, but I cant guarantee that!
Multiple programmes:
(by Perdita)If you are truly fortunate, you may be able to slow your computer just by opening multiple
programmes to run in the background while you play Shadows. This will, of course, work only
if you are in Windows (95 or 98).
Sites:
Turbo, MoSlo, and CPUKiller can be found at either ftp cdrom.com or Shareware.com on
C|Net. Just be sure to look under the right platform when seeking these utilities; MoSlo is a
DOS utility, and CPUKiller is a Windows utility.
MoSlo is also at: Dr. David's Super Crispy Software.
Turbo is at Adventure Gamer - The QfG Hint Team. Go to the QfG 4 section and then the
Downloads section. It is a .zip file, so you will need WinZip or Zip to open it.
Both MoSlo and Turbo are at Gromus' site: The Back Alleys of Shapeir.
Unknown Hero's reminder: Also remember that, when using Turbo or Moslo, you'll have to
load an earlier save game in order for it to work, which means you can't load a saved game at
the Tomb, a save outside the swamp would probably work fine (but then, I don't encounter
Error 52).
As for Winzip, just go to WinZip.com to download a shareware version of Winzip.
