How much do you love Matt? I think that he is an incredible soul. His wonderful personality and his amazing talent make him irresistible . . . in a friend way. I have a story about him that you can read. You will understand why I love him so much.
Why do you love Matt as much as you do? The first and only time I saw RENT, it was the Benny cast. I rushed and got 2nd row center seats. That show BLEW me away. I balled the whole second act. Anyways . . . Joshua and Matt were having a gig that night so I went. I was amazed and I bought Matt's cd. A few days ago, September 12th 2001 Matt and Joshua played a show here in Birmingham. I went and both Joshua and Matt did an incredible job, but I didn't get to hear my favorite song, Broken. So I fixed my schedule so I could go to their next show in Atlanta on the 14th. The day after the show my best friend and I got a call from a friend saying that he was jamming with Matt and Joshua at his college music building. So (of course), we stopped what we were doing and drove over to go see them. I got to hear them jam until early in the morning. When we were all saying goodbye I asked Matt to play Broken at his gig later that day. He happily obliged me and we all went our separate ways. I slept a little and picked up a friend and we headed over to Atlanta for their show. I ended up getting stuck in HEAVY traffic and I missed all of Matt's set including the song he played for ME. I got REALLY upset, I had driven all that way to hear Broken and I didn't get to hear it. I watched the rest Joshua's amazing set. After the show my friends and I ended up eating a late dinner with Matt, Tanya, and Joshua at a pizza place. We all talked and ate until early in the morning on Saturday. I still hadn't heard Broken so I asked Matt again to play it for me and he said he would at their next show. They had another gig in Atlanta and since Matt is going to be on Broadway in October, I decided that I had to go to their other gig in Atlanta. So my friend and I drove back to Birmingham (he had to be at theater rehearsal), I slept a little, and headed back to Atlanta. At this point in my story I'm exhausted, upset, and sad. I was having the worst week of my life for different reasons that I won't go into. I get to Atlanta and I go over to my friends apartment. Joshua was staying there and Matt had gotten a hotel room. All three of us were there for a while and then Joshua left. Let me skip ahead a little. My friends and I get to the gig. Joshua and Matt eventually get on and somehow Broken didn't get played. I broke down crying and I couldn't stop. A few minutes later Joshua came up to me and asked me if I was okay. I said no and he gave me the best hug I have ever had. After the show I was crying in my car and Matt came up to me and asked me if I still wanted to hear Broken. I said yes and he asked me to meet him at the stairs outside. So my two friends and I went over to the stairs. He took out his guitar and sang Broken to me. I started to cry again, it was so incredibly beautiful. He even let me tape it and he didn't have to do that. I thanked him, gave him a hug and I left to go home. He did something very special for me that I will always remember and that is why I love him so much.
