THE ISLAND OF PAG
The island of Pag is one of the largest ialands in the Adriatic,63 km in the lenght and 5 km in widt,with a 269 km

long indented coastline many shingle and sandy beaches and cliffs in the crystal clear sea.Pag offers a number of
visitors' opportunities: a thrill of pleasure and various experience but also a perfect rest in picturesque coastal
landscapes and on the beaches where potable water often springs from the rock.Beaches and many other sights on
the island can be reched by a total of 115 km of mountain cycling paths.The beauty of the landscape of Pag but also
various cycling paths and a combination of cycling ,swimming ,scuba

paths are also hinking trails.The steepest trail rises 263 m above the town of Pag,offering a beautiful view of the

In economy the town of Pag has traditionally been sea-oriented.Since ancient times it has been known for the

production of quality salt in undrained natural depressions in which water leaves a deposit of salt on evaporation
(salt panning).Such salt pans have been made in a extention of the cove near the village of Dinjiška (old,now
abandoned salt pans) and in the valley in which one of the backwaters of the Pag ends on dry land (still active salt
pans).Apart from fishing ,nautical tourism and scuba diving tourism are being developed.The protected cove
,resembling an arena ,surrounds the water stage in front of Pag,and summer landward breeze and autumn winds
provide excellent conditiones for sailing.Sunken ships ,rocks in the sea fish shelters and an abundance of sea flora
and fauna are enermously attractive to scuba divers.The sea is abundant in flora and fauna ,especially in the Velebit
and Maun Channels,and natural covers are ideal for water sports or relaxation on secluded beaches.



Extreme sports enthusiasts and the coura geous can enjoy alpinism,mounteering and the free climbing ,especially on

attractive cliffs above beautiful shingle beaches in numerous coves.The rock known as Zamak ,5 km from the town
of Pag ,has pitons for eight different climbing directions requiring different levels of effort,mostly 5c to 7c.The rock
Stogaj with the surrounding rocks has 13 climbing directions ,4b to 6c+.These climbing opportunities attract
modern tourists who are keen on attractive holidays and extreme sports.A special attraction for those who are
interested in the mysterious ios the megalithic imprint on stone,known as the «The Pag Triangle».This flat
triangle-shaped area of fragment stone is located in Tusto Celo ,an elevaton overlooking the Velebit mountain range
on the side and the Pag Cove on the other.No winds or rains could disturb the triangle,and it remains as a mistery
that puzzles anyone who comes there to see it.



Pag is also unique in its vegetation.Trees are the rarest from of the vegetation,as Pag is the kingdom of karst on the

Adriatic,with a lot of herbs.Grazing land is full of sage and immortelle;therefore the taste of sheeps's milk is
absolutely unique.The gastronomy of Pag is based on first class cheese and sheep's meat,localy made white wine
(Paška žutica),prosciutto ham,olive oil and seafood.The monastery of tre Benedictine nuns keeps a number of relics
and paintings,but also cherishes the tradition of making «baškotin» aromatised crisp bread,which is offered at the
entrance into the monastery.Its full taste can be best felt if dipped in coffee with milk.Sage,which colours the island
bluish in May gives exellent honey and tea,guaranteeing good health during long winter months.




The town of Pag ,the cultural centre of the island, is located in a picturesque cove.Along its coastline there are 20

km of shingle beaches.The fortified town from the 15th century was designed by the famous architect and sculptor
Juraj Dalmatinac (George of Dalmatia) and is very proud of its cultural heritage.Šimuni,formerly a picturesque
fishinf village ,is today a popular tourist resort,located in a natural and well-protected cove.It has a marina with 50
berths and the largest campsite on the island.All alonge the coastline there are shingle
beaches.Vlašići,Dinjiška,Miškovići and Smokvica are pleasant,¸peaceful and picturesque island resorts.
Due to their geographical location and intact nature they are mostla tourism-oriented,providing fantastic holiday
opportunities.Visitors can also enjoy and relax in unique landscape:vineyards karst and wilderness.There are several
ornithological reserves on the island,the most notable being Velo Blato near Dinjiška.Košljun,formerly an important
harbour with ferry lines to Dalmatia,is today a nice cove with holiday houses surounded by old pine trees.



Pag a free royal town since 1244, is a cultural and administrative centre of the island but also a popular tourist

resort.The mediaveal fortified town from the 15th century is a work of the famous architect and sculptor Juraj
Dalmatinac (George from Dalmatia).The town has been well preserved,with a number of cultular and historcal
monuments:the rector's palace,the monastery,the tower,Baroque-style balconies and coats of arms of noble
families.Due to its architecture and a number of artefacts the cathedral is a valuable cultural monument.It is proud
of its ritch cultural heritage and cherishers a centuries old tradition and customs.The world famous lace of Pag has
been mad efor centuries,each piece of lace being unique ,either as a decoration or a part of the luxuriant traditional
costume of Pag.The island also cherishes its folklore dances and songs.During the carnival of Pag there are many
cultural performances and entertainment.



Entertainment programs are offered mostly during the summer season.The well known attraction is the carnival of

Pag,which takes place both in winter and in summer (the end of July).During the carnival days and the tourist
season there are many cultural performances .»The cultural Summer of Pag « is a must for all classical music
enthusiasts.The centuries old tradition includes the performance known as «The female Slave of Pag « as well as
folklore and carnival performances.Old songs and dances are accompanied on «mišnjice» ,a folk music
instrument.Summer evenings offer programs to suit everyone's taste: a capella ensambles and choirs,fishermen's
evenings,open air music concerts and dances ,entertainment programs in hotels,discoteques,night clubs with
programs and performers and musicians from the country and abroad.



The indented coastline with a number of coves and capes is 269 km long.Sand and shingle ,with the crystal clear

seawater,cover numerous beaches.The largest cove,the Pag cove is surrounded by 20 kmof shingle beaches.Those in
the south-western part of the island ofer some shadow,although the island is very bare and rocky.Pag is the
kingdom of karst on the Adriatic ,however with the sources of portable water springing from the rock on many
beaches.Pag isfull of contasts:strange forms and shapes, wild exotic landscapes,peaceful oases,mountain
paths,shallow coves.Travelling on the nothern side of island is recommended only in summer.When there is no crowd
,this unique world of stone and seawater can provide unforgettable experience.Apart from the secluded beaches,all
tourist resorts have magnificent shingle or sandy beaches,the largest of them being the municipal beach of Pag.
