I got interested in ham radio because...
Rick Sedlak, 30636 Sw Kensington Drive, Wilsonville, OR 97070.
A friend of my father's, Ted Anderson, was a ham, WA2MGB (Momma's Good Boy).
Ted also served as a Boy Scout leader/instructor for various merit badges
like electronics, signalling and photography. As I worked for those merit
badges, Ted would occasionally invite me into his ham shack and would make
a few contacts. This was my first exposure to amateur radio. Needless to
say, I was hooked. I will always have a special place in my heart for Ted,
he was a great guy, and a very good friend. Ted became a silent key in
January, 2002. With Ted's help I got my first call sign, WN2CLR, 1967-68,
a two year novice license. My first rig was a straight key, an EICO 720,
90watt, CW, crystal (rock-bound) transmitter, two 40 meter CW crystals,
a 40 meter dipole strung between two trees, and a Hallicrafters SX-28
Super Skyrider (boat anchor) receiver. Then I was WA2HJK, 1968-73.
I let my license lapse at this point. Out of college & several years
later I sold the first rig and got a used Collins KWM2-A tranceiver.
I retested and became N2CHR in 1981. I Worked the HF bands through 1986
with an attic strung 10-15-20m trapped dipole, and isotron-40 and -80 antennas.
Off the air for several years raising three wonderful daughters,
in 2002 I purchased my first vhf/uhf radio,
a VX-5R Yaesu 50/144/430 handheld transceiver.
My equipment consists of... KWM2A, 516F-1, Bencher Iambic Paddle, CMOS Super Keyer from the original 1981 April QST kit, 10-15-20 trapped dipole, isotron-40 and -80 antennas. Recently got a Yaesu VX-5R. A great little handheld. Heathkit HD-1410 keyer ; Heathkit HW-101 HF tranceiver & power supply ; Hallicrafters S-40A general coverage HF Receiver ; Realistic Pro 2020 Scanner ; Sharp FV-1710 Multiband Delux SW portable receiver ; Heathkit HM-102 SWR meter ; Micronta(Radio Shack) 21-524 20-2kw swr/pwr meter ; Tenco FS-9C 10-100w swr/pwr/fs meter ; Rustler MKR-2/SF-2 5/8 wave 2mtr ant ; ATOC Ironhorse ATM 144-440 BN magmount ant ; Saratoga COM 144/440-3 w/NMO magmount BAS-04 antenna.
Over the years I've owned and resold: Hallicrafters SX-28, Eico 720, Knight-Kit Star Roamer, Heathkit DX-60A, Bearcat 300 scanner.
I would like to try the following new things in ham radio in the next 10 years...
Contact a Space Shuttle
When I'm not on the radio, you can normally find me...
Having fun with my family, playing acoustic guitar, some keyboards,
helping out with my church youth groups, playing chess,
net-surfing for jazz guitar and music theory or ham radio stuff,
listening on the HF bands logging DX reception, attending my daughters'
middle school and high school plays and choir productions.
