| A freed paedophile who abused 3 boys after changing his name by deed poll to dodge the sex offenders register was jailed for life yesterday. James McAlpine 34, changed his name to Jay Powers by deed poll after being released early on licence from a 30 month jail sentence. He set himself up as a tennis coach and police and probation officers had no idea where he was until one of the victims called Childline. Ministers have now pledged to close the loophole and police will now be informed of any name changes McAlpine was jailed for just 30 months in 1997 for seven indecent assults. He moved to Devon ipon his release. Exeter Crown Court heard how he met the lads through coaching and even moved in with one of their mothers. He groomed the boys aged 12-14 by showing them porn and playing games of dare. Then after abusing them, he bought their silence with gifts. |

| A convicted paedophile who spent his first night of freedom in a hotel where children were sleeping is back behind bars. John Bates 38 was jailed again for a "technical breach" of his parole terms. Fury erupted after he was freed from a five year child abuse sentence last month and stayed in a Manchester hotel when nowhere else could be found. |

| A Judge has been criticised after he said that a 32 year old man who had sex with a girl of 12 was not a paedophile. Judge Alistair Bell sentenced Nigel Hall to 12 months in prison but said he had "merely permitted his inclinations to overcome his judgement". Readers of newspapers were outraged and felt the judgement sent out the wrong message to paedophiles. |

| A man has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a traffic cone! Passers by alerted police after seeing a man grappling with the red and white plastic bollard late at night. Officers rusged to the Calton Hill area of Edinburgh and arrested Ross Watt 33. He is accused of a breach of the peace. A spokesman at Gayfield police station said "A man has been charged after an incident in Calton Road and a report submitted. The Calton Hill area has caused controversy in recent years after becoming notorious for open air sex. |

| Victoria:Outcry over $200 fine for fifth child-sex conviction A public outcry over the sentence imposed on a serial paedophile, fined $200 after his fifth conviction, has prompted an appeal by prosecution authorities. The appeal, and a police directive to prosecutors, could change the way courts are asked to treat previous convictions. Director of Public Prosecutions Paul Coghlan, QC, has appealed on the grounds that Keith Richard Draper`s punishment was inadequate. Draper, 67, walked free with a good-behaviour bond last month after a magistrate was not told about four previous court appearances and treated him as a first offender. A County Court judge will hear the appeal, which will deal with Draper`s case afresh and is likely to consider his history. The case has led to prosecutors being told to alert magistrates to all previous convictions, no matter when they occurred. Draper has served only one month in jail despite pleading guilty to sex offences five times in the past three years. He has been treated as a first offender five times because of the order in which the cases were heard. |
| Queensland: Boys abused by �helpful� housing boss A department of Housing manager helped a domestic violence victim find a home and then molested her two young sons, a court was told. Kerry Michael Brassel, described by his own barrister as "somewhat of a pathetic creature", was sentenced in Southport District Court on 17 counts of indecently dealing with a child under 12 in his care. Crown prosecutor Judy Geary told the court Brassel was working as an area manager for the Department of Housing on the Gold Coast when the offences occurred earlier this year. Ms Geary said the brothers, aged six and 11, met Brassel when they and their mother moved into a refuge near his home in January. Brassel had befriended the family and helped them apply for a government-funded home unit. Ms Geary said the boys visited Brassel before school and at weekends and on one night had stayed at his house. Brassel molested the boys for five months, touching them and engaging in masturbation and oral sex. |
