9 DAYS Tour - Eastern Uganda and Mount Elgon National Park SAfari
Introduction: The second highest mountain in Uganda is an extinct volcano located in the eastern part of the country on the border with Kenya. This region provides a stunning variety of landscapes, vegetation and cultures.
Access: The park's HQs are in Mbale where your trip can be organised from. The attractive town is reachable within 4 hours drive from Kampala on good tarmaced road.
Major Attractions: Mountain climbing, the Sippi Falls and avariety of wildlife including Bushbuck, tree hyrax, buffalo, waterbuck, duiker, bushpig, leopard etc. Mount Elgon has a gradual slope as ypu climb to the Caladera or crater rim. Climbing the peak requires no special equipment or technical climbing experience. There are great caves of historical significance, rock paintings, gorges and water falls which provide some of the most exciting sceneries in Uganda. The terraced coffee plantations and the bamboo forest enhance the wonderful views. Birdlife is particularly prolific in this area. Sipi falls are a particular favourite to photographers and lastly there is the old fashioned house that was a retreat to the last colonial governer of Uganda.
Itinerary: Day 1: Leave Kampala and proceed to Mbale via Jinja. Stop-over at the Uganda Matyers Shrine in Namugongo, mabira forest for a short forest walk. At Jinja you will visit the famous source of the world's longest river, the River Nile, and then proceed to Mbale. Dinner and overnight at the Sippi Falls Rest Camp. Day 2: Ascend via the Sasa trail, descend via the Piswa
trail: Day 3: Sasa River to Sasa Patrol Hut (2 hrs). Sasa Patrol Hut to Mude Cave campsite (1 h). Strong walkers may leave their bags at Mude and continue to Jackson's summit 4,192 m (2 hrs). Spend the night at Mude Cave. Day 4: Mude Cave to Wagagi Peak 4,321 m (4 hrs) and return to Mude Cave. Day 5: Mude Cave to Caldera and Hot Springs (4 hrs). Caldera to hunter's Cave Camp (3 hrs). Day 6: Hunter's Cave Camp to Piswa Patrol Hut (6 hrs). Day 7: Piswa Patrol Hut to Kamnarkut (2 hrs). Kamnarkut to Kapchorwa (2 1/2 hrs). Day 8: Visit the Sipi Falls. Dinner and overnight at the Sipi Rest Camp. Day 9: After breakfast leave Mbale to return to Kampala at leisure speed, arriving in the late afternoon.
Costs of safari include: Full board accommodation and meals; park activities, entry fees, safari vehicle inclusive driver/tour guide, mileage and fuel.
