In 1999 the Sulawesi Coelacanth was described as a new species, Latimeria Menadoensis, by Pouyaud, Wirjoatmodjo, Rachmatika, Tjakrawidjaja, Hadiaty and Hadie. The wise local people, however, were already quite familiar with the mighty Coelacanth, and called it RAJA LAUT or KING OF THE SEA. It has long been believed that we humans are the descendents of the great fish. Indeed, the paired fins of the lobe-finned Coelacanth are thought to have given rise to the limbs of all land-living animals.
