| What are dragons you ask? |
| Dragons are mystical creatures that have been portrayed as many different things. Reptile-like in nature, they genaerally have wings and most can breath fire. Some say they breath ice and fire alike. Some believe they need a fuel to breath fire while others believe they have an internal fire within them they just can breath out. Many stories show dragons as vicious, cruel, man-eating creatures that symbolize evil or the Devil. I personally think that they are just misunderstood. Anne McCaffrey shows a gentler, more friendly image of dragons and their relationships with mankind. Pern is a planet in the system of Rukbat in the books. Humans came and colonized the planet and found little creatures called fire lizards. Like minature dragons, they bonded with the human present at its birth. After a short time, silvery-gray organisms began to fall from the skies, eating all organic life they touched. The people had a real problem. Scientists decided to create an enlarged version of the fire lizards to help protect them from this new threat, commonly called Thread. The dragons fire killed this deadly worm and kept the Pernese alive. To read these totally awesome books, go to your local library or bookstore and look in the science fiction section.
