South Park vs. Scientology
"I just told him I thought the Napoleon Dynamite guy is a better actor than he is." - Stan Marsh
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone were subject to controversy for the episode titled "Trapped in the Closet." In this episode, Stan is told he is the reincarnation of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. He is further told that he must lead Scientology into the future. Unexpectedly, Tom Crusie comes to visit Stan and asks what he thinks of his acting? Stan says he's not as good as some other actors, which leads to Tom Cruise locking himself in Stan's closet, refusing to come out. In the end, Stan reveals that he is infact not the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard and says that "Scientology is just a big fat global scam."
Xenu
Following the airing of the episode they were rumours going around that Tom Cruise was going to pull from promoting his new movie Mission Impossible III if the episode was to re-broadcast. Cruise later denied the rumours, saying that he was too invovled in the making of the film. Here is what the South Park creators had to say about it...
"So, Scientology, you may have won THIS battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun! Temporarily anozinizing our episode will NOT stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies. Curses and drat! You have obstructed us for now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu!!!" - Trey Parker and Matt Stone
Following this episode aswell saw the departure of long-time cast member Isaac Hayes. As a memeber of the Chruch of Scientology, Hayes had this to say:

"Guys, you have it all wrong. We're not like that. I know that's your thing, but get your information correct, because somebody might believe that shit, you know? But I understand what they're doing. I told them to take a couple of Scientology courses, and understand what we do. [Laughs]"

Stone responded:

"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem and he's cashed plenty of checks with our show making fun of Christians...He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and, to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."
